The estuary's alluvial terraces and the specific climate of the Charente-Maritime region is ideal for the production of well known wines and Cognacs. Bordeaux, Cotes de Blaye, Cotes de Bourg and of course the Pineau Cognac brandies. A little further up the estuary towards the town of Meschers is the evidence of Trogoldyte man who made his home in the cliffs of the estuary. The PALEOSITE is an interactive centre on the N141 near the town of Saintes which provides a very informative journey in time.

The Charente-Maritime is a department on the west coast of France named after the Charente river. Charente-Inferieure was one of the 83 original departments created during the French Revolution on March 4th 1790. On September 4th, 1941 it was renamed Charente Maritime. The imposing 11th century chateau overlooks the town with medieval alleys, a covered market, Romanesque church 15th century town gate and stone bridge. We live in South West France, in the Charente Maritime, department 17, just 60 km north from Bordeaux and about 120km south of La Rochelle. We are on the edge of the village of St Bonnet Sur Gironde, on the D145 road following the Gironde Estauary towards St Ciers Sur Gironde. This natural site is on the main route of migratory birds and can be explored easily by walking, cycling, boat trips on the Gironde or by kayaking excursions. Vitrezay offers visitors the use of traditional sea fishing carrelets or the freshwater fishing for Carp in the well stocked lakes.
