The Estate keeps its properties maintained to a high standard and has its own maintenance team as well as using external contractors. Location & Contacts. The Southwick Estate is privately owned and managed by John Robin Thistlethwayte and his son Mark Edward Thistlethwayte who are the descendants of John Whyte. The Estate owns almost the entirety of the main village with the exception of Southwick House, as this was requisitioned by the government during World War II and compulsorily purchased in 1950. Location & Contacts. The actively managed woodland comprises approximately 1,250 acres of mainly ancient semi natural woodland or ancient woodland sites and the predominant crop is Oak and Sweet Chestnut, these woods were originally part of the Forest of Bere. 20% of the Estate’s woodland were damaged in the great storms of 1987 and 1989.
