Dave Drawdy is a Rokudan Renshi, Nakamura Ryu Batto Do as well as a Sandan, Mugai Ryu Iaihyodo, and a Shodan, Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu. Dave is also a Director of Capital Area Budokai (Non-profit) and a retired Sergeant Major, U.S. Army.

While teaching kenjutsu in northern China he was inspired with the thought that EJII HAPPO, the eight rules of calligraphy, could be applied to swordsmanship. As Nakamura Taizaburo practiced the ei character (this is to calligraphy what do-re-mi is to music), he saw in his mind that the eight strokes of the brush traced the trajectory of the word when cutting. Nakamura Taizaburo began to organize his realization and ideas into a system of practical swordsmanship devoid of meaningless techniques.

Nakamura Ryu Batto-Do
Learn the Japanese art of the sword. Batto, like iai, is a 'drawing sword' art that begins and ends with the sword in the saya. Grew from basic swordsmanship for military officers taught at the Toyama Military Academy in the late 1920's, although it has deep roots in several koryu, or older styles. Students learn basic sword techniques, one- and two-person forms, and cutting. There is no sparring. Emphasis is on focus and control, effective technique, and spirit. We are guided by Dave Drawdy.
