My Dutch Garden: Flooding, Greenhouses and Rose Arches

http://mydutchgarden.blogspot.com/2007/07/flooding-greenhouses-and-rose-arches.html

An expat mom grows stuff. Sunday, July 22, 2007. Flooding, Greenhouses and Rose Arches. Just been up to the allotment to find that some of the localised thunderstorms we have been having localised themselves directly over the Nesserlaan! I took some pictures. First here is the flooding:. See the flooding on the pathway too? They are placed at right angles to cover the beds of ailing tomatoes and protect them from the wind and storms that are expected the next few days. When they are used properly the...

My Dutch Garden: Too too hot

http://mydutchgarden.blogspot.com/2007/06/too-too-hot.html

An expat mom grows stuff. Friday, June 8, 2007. It's 35 degrees out there and we're melting. I visited the allotment this afternoon at lunch time as we have a busy week and it's the only time I could go. I can't help but feel that the water I gave the plants probably all evaporated! I asked about the redcurrants on my plot and apparently the plants are 17 years old! June 11, 2007 at 3:10 PM. I have very good experience with buying new plants. June 16, 2007 at 7:25 AM. My Dutch Garden: Tomato Update

http://mydutchgarden.blogspot.com/2007/07/tomato-update.html

An expat mom grows stuff. Sunday, July 22, 2007. Weeks since I updated on the garden, but first I'll do an update on the tomatoes. The Orange Berry cherry tomatoes. Are ripening. The few that I had on the allotment ripened first, but have very poor yields due to the excess rain we had (and are still having). But, hey, I got a few and everyone said I wouldn't harvest anything! Each Orange Berry plant (at home in containers) has set about five trusses with about 8 fruits per truss. Is also a moderately vig...

My Dutch Garden: April 2007

http://mydutchgarden.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

An expat mom grows stuff. Thursday, April 26, 2007. 34 days and counting . Without rain, that is! I can't believe it. The newspaper headlines. Today were full of how it's not quite a drought. In a place where it usually rains every day I think this qualifies as a drought! I'm especially concerned because I'm on vacation. This week. I've asked some of the other gardeners to look after my plot and water my plants, but there's always the fear of returning to find everything dead and dying. Today I quickly v...

My Dutch Garden: February 2007

http://mydutchgarden.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

An expat mom grows stuff. Wednesday, February 7, 2007. My green thumbs are about to get a workout. Yesterday I went to the volkstuin. Community garden or allotment for English speakers) and finalised the deal with the head of the association. I am now the proud lessee of 50 m2. Of very muddy tilled land which currently houses a plum tree and some blackberry canes. You can see some pictures I took at the allotment today over here. Including a beautiful photograph of a heron in the water. Bed #5: Tomatoes,...

VERMONT GARDENS: June 17, 2009

http://vermontgardens.blogspot.com/2009_06_17_archive.html

Always Growing Hardy Plants For Hardy Vermonters And Their Friends. Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Seeing a large clump by the side of the road suggests something that has probably been growing for over 50 years. The background foliage is from Dicentra. Gold Heart'. This is a mutation from the common bleeding heart and has been around since about1997. Someplace I read that it was found in England. The prices finally came down enough that Gail bought some to offer customers. Labels: D...

VERMONT GARDENS: Heavy Rains, Happy Mother's Day

http://vermontgardens.blogspot.com/2009/05/heavy-rains-happy-mothers-day.html

Always Growing Hardy Plants For Hardy Vermonters And Their Friends. Sunday, May 10, 2009. Heavy Rains, Happy Mother's Day. Sunday, May 10, 2009. A cold morning here on the mountain with a slight wind and a rawness to the air that makes all of us want to stay inside for the morning. Karl the Wonder Dog apparently has an internal weather evaluator that suggests he continue to sleep in as I can hear him snoring in the other room. Usually he is already out and about but today is different. Next time you and ...

VERMONT GARDENS: Early Morning Bruiser

http://vermontgardens.blogspot.com/2009/06/early-morning-bruiser.html

Always Growing Hardy Plants For Hardy Vermonters And Their Friends. Sunday, June 14, 2009. Sunday, June 14, 2009. We headed down the road towards the pond and had hardly passed the mailboxes when he froze in the road, so statue-like that I almost pulled his collar off. With coffee spilling and expletives flying we had stopped dead in front of the lower hosta. Dirt road of two centuries existence. And a recent topping of calcium chloride. Had packed it harder. Into the hard pan. Have to get along. The...
