Last august 2015 I was travelling through central Europe with my girlfriend looking for butterflies, see also one of my previous posts. One of the species I wanted to try to see was Freyer's purple emperor Apatura metis. At both locations we saw a great number of Apatura species and although most were readily identified as Lesser purple emperor Apatura ilia. A typical Lesser purple emperor f. clytie.

During the last week I have been searching again for Scarce tortoiseshell Nymphalis xanthomelas. In the northern part of Belgium. Unfortunately without luck for the Scarce tortoiseshell but I still had a species-rich two days with eggs of Ilex hairstreak Satyrium ilicis. Caterpillars of Glanville fritillary Melitaea cinxia.
