Speak Easy: Surprise!... Not So Happy After All.

http://www.speakeasy481.blogspot.com/2012/02/surprise-not-so-happy-after-all.html

Thursday, February 16, 2012. Not So Happy After All. In “The Passing of Grandison”, the shock of course is when Grandison returns only to free all of his friends and family from slavery, after he himself has become the token slave for the South: life is better for slaves with masters right? Even Grandison didn’t really think so. So what I wonder is when did he make his plot to freedom, did he already know when he left he should be planning to free everyone? Speak Easy: January 2012

http://www.speakeasy481.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 26, 2012. You guys, prior to reading Emily Dickensen’s poems, I knew nothing about her. Perhaps it was a flaw in my education, or my individual studies, but for realz, nothing, nada, everything we talked about in class surprised me. Which brings me to, THOSE CRAZIES. Do you have to be crazy to write good poetry? More importantly if she wasn’t a crazy would her poetry be as genius as it is? I say no. My evidence to support his claim is… name a poet who isn’t crazy! Banker – Father! Twain...

Wednesday, March 28, 2012. Wharton, every time I have hope you crush it! But really, I think I wouldn’t be as satisfied if you didn’t crush it. March 29, 2012 at 6:38 PM. March 29, 2012 at 7:54 PM. I agree that this book is much better that it crushes hope. But I not even sure if there was much hope there to begin with, and Im almost happy that Charity got what she got in the end because it was her inability or unwillingness to change herself that spelled her demise. Speak Easy: MADE

http://www.speakeasy481.blogspot.com/2012/03/made.html

Thursday, March 1, 2012. Of the three stories that we read for class today, I was most intrigue by “The Mexican”. This I think is for several reasons. This is how I imagine Rivera, only more hate in his eyes. This is how I imagine Danny only with smile cemented on his face. March 1, 2012 at 3:01 PM. March 1, 2012 at 6:41 PM. Naturalism in general doesnt really appeal to me because Im a happy story happy ending sort of girl, but i appreciate the effect it has in Londons stories. March 3, 2012 at 10:09 AM.

English 481, Popular Then/Classic Now. Monday, April 16, 2012. Don't worry if you didn't do Paper 3 and see a 0 in that spot; it doesn't mean anything, since only the top 2 papers in that category will count. Angel requires that a numerical grade be listed, so that's why there might be a zero there. I haven't posted the report grades yet, but the other grades we've completed thus far should be in Angel. English 481, Popular Then/Classic Now. Monday, February 27, 2012. Looking ahead to poetry. After we discuss Jack London this week, we'll be moving on to poetry- the "heirs of Emily Dickinson" (or are they? Portion of the course. I've added Stephen Crane's poetry to that of Frost and Stevens, and I will be giving you a handout with all three sets of poems. Be sure to bring your books, though, since one of the things we'll be doing is referring to Dickinson's poems when we read these other poets. Don't for...
