Budo Blog: June 2014

Monday, June 2, 2014. The other day at the Violence Dynamics Semester Course we were discussing asocial violence and predators. Because, if you haven’t noticed, I’m kind of a pop culture guy, I quoted a recent episode of “Fargo the Series”. Here is the set up:. Colin Hanks plays Deputy Gus Grimly, a rural Minnesota law enforcement officer. Grimly is low man on the totem pole at his department, even working part time as animal control when/if the regular animal guy calls in sick. Now they don’t. But that ...

Sunday, April 20, 2014. Strong Roots - Useful Fruits. Hey everybody welcome back to the Budo Blog and thanks for reading. Couple things bouncing around the old noggin recently. Obtaining knowledge, refining that knowledge to its base principles. The purpose of Operational Disciplines Training (ODIN) is to get a trainee to an effective level of proficiency in the practical application of personal protection as efficiently (see also quickly) as possible. In organizing ODIN and with advice from Randy King I...

Wednesday, January 29, 2014. Help me, to help you, to help others. Help me, to help you, to help others. That was a phrase an old Sergeant of mine used to use tongue in check in regard to “touchy feely” artificial community oriented policing programs. However, I sincerely feel a need to help. Not only young men and women interested in entering the service of others, but future generations as a whole. As big a deal as I am I can’t affect an entire generation single handed. What do I mean by that? One part...

Thursday, December 5, 2013. Laugh it up Fuzz Ball. I got into a stupid argument with my wife the other day. You'd think as a guy who teaches conflict communication I'd be better at using it. The hows and whys of the argument aren't important, but after it happened I recognized that my monkey was doing the yelling and I allowed my self to become angry over nothing. If you don't understand what I mean by monkey look at some older blogs in which I discuss conflict communications. Is that a trained response?

Thursday, February 27, 2014. Cross over. That terms has several meanings. For my fellow comic book book nerds it means when one character crosses over and shows up in another character's book. Like this Batman / Hulk cross over from 1981. In that cross over Batman defeated Marvel's mightiest hero. How? Because he is the god damned Batman that's how. Cross over in regard to training means training in one discipline that crosses over and improves skills in another. This blog entry will address both. Advert...

Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Too fat to fight. Too fat to fight. America’s soft underbelly, and what can be done about it. I listen to 93X on my way in to work in the morning – brotherhood 2000 15. Last week the half assed morning show was talking about a report released by Mission: Readiness, a group of retired generals titled “Too Fat, Frail, and Out-of-Breath to Fight.”. Here is an article about that report from the Star and Tribune. Http:/ www.startribune.com/lifestyle/health/301829151.html. 8220;Long-term...

Tuesday, June 23, 2015. Batman by 40 one year later. What have I learned? Batman by 40 was a peak, an apex. An apex by definition is difficult, if not impossible to maintain. To get there you have to want "it". It" has to be more important than instant gratification. A double scoop of blue moon ice cream sure would be good right about now. But I really want to run 3 miles at an 8 min pace next week. Which one do you want more? Working hard to become Batman is satisfying. Being Batman is gratifying. I inc...

Wednesday, November 19, 2014. So, this is a thing now. Post Violence Dynamics brain dump. As I previously mentioned the Vio Dy seminar was a blast again this year. One of the reasons I go through all the work of putting something like that together every year is it always blows my mind. So again, this blog will primarily be a brain dump of sorts to get the thoughts in my head on “paper” before I forget them. Allowing me to further develop them throughout the year. So where to start? People are wired to l...
