Reducing the cost of structured writing and publishing systems development. In Praise of Silos. I’m not sure who first started to use the word “silo” as a term of abuse in the computing world, but it seems to be the go-to word for any systems that limits access to its data in any way that the author deems inappropriate. I’m not sure if whoever coined the term was thinking of grain silos or missile silos — perhaps the latter, which would fit the usage better. Silos store and organize grain for distribution.

Which states that “the value of a telecommunications network is proportional to the square of the number of connected users of the system”. What has a telecommunications network got to do with content management failure? 4(4-1)/2 = 4*3/2 = 6. This is w...

SPFE vs DITA » SPFE.info
http://spfe.info/spfe-vs-dita
Reducing the cost of structured writing and publishing systems development. DITA is the best-known structured writing architecture in use today, so any other architecture needs to explain what it offers that is different from DITA. Every architecture or system optimizes for some things at the expense of others. SPFE is not intended to be another DITA. Rather, it presents a very different architectural approach to structured writing that optimizes for different things. Queries vs. Maps. Reuse is certainly...
