MIRCAM with 48 mm lens. Pilot view of the Moon. The Air Force required us to develop an overlay menu that would enable the pilot to view images through a camera control panel controlled by his joystick. At left is shown a view of the moon through the control panel. The user can also switch between the pilot view control panel and a laboratory control panel with more features and a pixel intensity map displayed below the real-time image. This simplifies camera set-up and calibration.

Cryocooling and Calibration Components. The operation of the TIRSCS is shown on the far left where the laser is firing at themal paper mounted on teflon. The teflon spectrum is shown below the plume photo. The very first interferogram and spectrum captured by the TIRSCS are shown on the immediate left. This is a spectrum of a wavy long pass filter. SPILAB began work on cryo-cooled infrared cameras in 2003 with the development of the Miniature Infrared Camera (MIRCAM). The project was funded by Eglin AFB to replace a small, visible wavelength camera within the test pod of a F-16 Fighting Falcon. The space was extremely limited, so the infrared replacement camera needed to be significantly smaller than existing cryo-cooled cameras. The MIRCAM prototype is shown on the left with its 48 mm lens.
