Spring Valley Roses: Winter Birds Brighten the Winter Landscape
http://springvalleyroses.blogspot.com/2014/02/winter-birds-brighten-winter-landscape.html
Views from the garden. Thursday, February 27, 2014. Winter Birds Brighten the Winter Landscape. Watching our backyard birds is one of the joys of our long, cold winters! Cardinals at the sunflower seeder. Even though the landscape may look bleak in February, the birds add lots of color and life to our gardens. Birds flock to yards and gardens when they have what they need:. And we think that's the order of importance to birds, too. Bluejays stopping by for breakfast on a cold winter morning. Here's a picture of a male Northern Oriole eating grape jelly at a feeder in our garden. I heard a House Wren calling this morning, too. So, spring is really here. Links to this post. Spring Valley Roses: How to Prevent Birds from Crashing Into Your Windows
http://springvalleyroses.blogspot.com/2014/03/how-to-prevent-birds-from-crashing-into.html
Views from the garden. Saturday, March 15, 2014. How to Prevent Birds from Crashing Into Your Windows. Thump We've all heard that sickening sound when a bird hits a window. It's so sad! Even if a bird flies away, it's usually injured and will die. Birds don't "see" glass, especially if it's reflecting the surrounding landscape, which is usually does. Some birds, will "attack" their reflection in the window during breeding season. Cardinals are especially known for doing this. Sticky decals spaced far apa...
Spring Valley Roses: June 2013
http://springvalleyroses.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Views from the garden. Sunday, June 9, 2013. We are really lucky to have a wide variety of native wildflowers growing in the woods at our nursery. What's interesting, is that many of these are now in our gardens. We didn't plant any of them - they just showed up! We're thinking the birds must be bringing in the seeds. Or, they're showing up in the mulch that we put on the garden beds. Wild Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) - a hummingbird magnet! Grows 1-2 feet tall and self seeds when it's happy. Jack-in...

Views from the garden. Monday, January 21, 2013. A male House Finch showing off his beautiful red color in the winter garden. House Finches are wonderful to have in your yard and garden. The males show pretty reddish colors on their head and chests. Both males and females have brownish stripes on their bodies. The males have a beautiful song that they sing throughout the year, but mostly in the spring and summer. House Finches on a tube feeder eating black-oiler sunflower seeds. A female House Finch.
