Saturday, February 20, 2010. Adventures at state agencies. You have got to be kidding me. Seriously. SERIOUSLY? You can always expect a long wait and some curious people-watching, but never have I had an experience at the Social Security office as I did the other day. Now, I'm a pretty patient person, and after a couple years of commuting to work on Portland's public transportation system, I'd like to think that I have pretty tolerant attitude toward the public at large. Stinky people? The room is slowly...

Saturday, January 30, 2010. There's nothing quite like a lazy Saturday morning when the weather outside is dreary, the air inside in chilly, and you have nothing (absolutely nothing! Sleeping in until 10, warm people wrapped in a dense, heavy cocoon of blankets. The warm, roasty smell of brewing coffee. Dragging chairs and laptops into the warm kitchen and sharing internet clips and funny blog posts we wait for sweet popovers to "pop" in the oven. Weaving curious, inquisitive stories on the radio. These,...

Sunday, August 2, 2009. In which we are seduced yet again by the Wallowas. You'd think we'd have learned after the first time: the Wallowas do not kid around. Being the suckers for granite, alpine lakes, and green trees that we are, Charlie and I decided that, rather than blow things up for the 4th of July, we'd hit the trail for a two-night 14-mile backpack up into Oregon's Eagle Cap Wilderness area. You may remember our previous trip there - what with the September first snowfall and all. Things starte...

http://www.spudward.blogspot.com/2009/04/proving-myself-wrong-yet-again.html

Tuesday, April 21, 2009. Proving myself wrong, yet again. Two weeks ago, I was lamenting our spring here in Idaho:. It just isn't LUSH enough! I miss Portland's exuberant cherry trees.". Pouting, I prepared to move from a drab, brown winter, into a muted, subdued spring. But, as usual, when I complain about something, I had to eat my words. On Easter afternoon, since Charlie had to work, I took a walk by myself through the North End to enjoy the sunny day. Cherry trees! Forsythia (Boise LOVES this plant)!

We Eat :: We Bloom: The World's Best Tortilla Soup

http://webloom.blogspot.com/2008/10/worlds-best-tortilla-soup.html

Monday, October 27, 2008. The World's Best Tortilla Soup. So I've promised this recipe to about a zillion people. So please: MAKE IT! A big soup pot. A blender or food processor (if you only have a blender, start with smaller chunks of things before blending). A large bowl (preferably one that isn't made of glass and didn't belong to your great grandmother- they tend to break when making contact with boiling broth). For the TORTILLA STRIPS. 8 or more round corn tortillas, cut into 1/2" strips. Mexican Cr...

We Eat :: We Bloom: Revisioning.

http://webloom.blogspot.com/2008/10/revisioning.html

Wednesday, October 01, 2008. I doubt anyone from the "outside world" is still reading along on this site, but, in case you are I suppose a little explanation is in order. As is referenced in the description bar, Bloom is undergoing a little bit of a tectonic shift. Don't let the earthquake fool you, though, it's going to be better than ever. Blame Celeste's tweeting about her Hungarian mushroom soup. That's what started it. It'll take a little while to get things going, and some things are certainly off-...

PortlandiaQuill: January 2008

http://portlandiaquill.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

RECENT THOUGHTS FROM A PORTLAND EX-PAT IN IDAHO. Thursday, January 17, 2008. Writing family narrative is more difficult than it seems. At first blush, writing family narrative should be easy. It's confessional, it's personal, and it's a topic that's close to your heart. What to tell and what not to tell, how long to keep it and how short to make it all end up cramping things a little. Especially when it's written for a class. But it feels a little like secondary school, you know? On a pessimistic note, i...

RECENT THOUGHTS FROM A PORTLAND EX-PAT IN IDAHO. Thursday, June 3, 2010. As most of you well know, I was recently kidnapped in London and held hostage for an e-mail ransom. The result of this adventure was the unfortunate deletion of my old e-mail addresses, ariel.holman@gmail.com, the one tied to this blog, being one of them. We have many wonderful things to share - including a marching marmot, and pictures and stories from our trip out to Grand Teton National Park. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

PortlandiaQuill: July 2008

http://portlandiaquill.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

RECENT THOUGHTS FROM A PORTLAND EX-PAT IN IDAHO. Thursday, July 31, 2008. The weather, among other things. In the Pacific Northwest, the air feels thick. It's thick with moisture and damp air. It's wet and heavy and it smells clean. Like the atmosphere just after a good rain: even though it's dense with moisture it feels healthy. But so far that's been about it. You certainly don't get the surprise and variety I'm used to from Seattle and Portland. In the meantime, I'm trying to focus on the positive: I'...

RECENT THOUGHTS FROM A PORTLAND EX-PAT IN IDAHO. Wednesday, August 27, 2008. Because we've had a couple phone calls. No, we were not anywhere near the fire that ripped through the SE Boise suburbs. On Monday night. It was pretty awful, though. Nine houses were destroyed, and another one was damaged. A very popular linguistics and English professor at Boise State University was killed. In other news, I found out today that I type 77 words per minute! I'm impressed with myself. Goooooo TEAM! Other, other n...

RECENT THOUGHTS FROM A PORTLAND EX-PAT IN IDAHO. Monday, September 8, 2008. Hot, but not like burn-down-the-neighborhood hot. So, if you're following things on Twitter, you know that I made some outstanding brownies yesterday. I've been on a roll when it comes to cooking this weekend, in fact. But as good as everything has been, these brownies take the cake. I got the recipe from my new favorite cooking blog, SmittenKitchen. What makes them so good? The slow, subtle chipotle burn. Then, last night, knowi...

PortlandiaQuill: Little things.

http://portlandiaquill.blogspot.com/2009/12/little-things.html

RECENT THOUGHTS FROM A PORTLAND EX-PAT IN IDAHO. Tuesday, December 8, 2009. We squabbled a little last night over whether it was a good idea for Charlie to ride his bike to work tomorrow (a couple inches of snow on the ground, slick roads, cold temps). I made him promise to ride his bike on the sidewalk if he did (no shoulder or room for cars to manuver around him was my thinking.). He reluctantly agreed. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). We Eat :: We Bloom: 10.2006

http://webloom.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 05, 2006. Stepping back in time. Since D's schedule is too busy to accommodate things like the internet blog-o-sphere, she's e-mailed the pictures she took of the garden to me and I am going to write about them here instead. That way your gratification is a little closer to instant than it would be otherwise. So, without further adieu, we began with some starter veggies. We started off at Pistil's on Mississippi and A-Boy on Barbur. Both places had nice green veggie starts, and we f...

PortlandiaQuill: Morning.

http://portlandiaquill.blogspot.com/2009/12/morning.html

RECENT THOUGHTS FROM A PORTLAND EX-PAT IN IDAHO. Wednesday, December 9, 2009. Last night was bell-clear. The cold settles everything out of the air. Its as if the night holds its breath, waiting for morning. Dawn rises a soft pink. Small clouds hang low, puffs of frozen breath snagged in the trees. We wake slowly, the sun itself finding it difficult to rise this crisp, cold morning. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Follow me on Twitter. What to do when in Utah? Drive-through pawn shops are always a plus. For the third year in a row, Charlie and I roadtripped down to Utah over Memorial Day weekend. I hope youre comfortable (go grab something to drink) because we have a LOT of pictures to share and I cant help but include a few stories along the way. On Thurs...
