Beer And Waffles: The Warm Heart of Africa
http://beerandwaffles.blogspot.com/2013/08/the-warm-heart-of-africa.html
Monday, August 26, 2013. The Warm Heart of Africa. Our last stop in our epic trip was Malawi. Our friends Monica and Emile are living there while Monica works for the Norwegian foreign service and we thought this was the perfect opportunity to explore a country we'd never get to otherwise. This of course begs the question: Howee was Malawi? In a word - great. We had to be on the 6 am Cape Town- Johannesburg flight to make our connection to Lilongwe (Capital of Malawi - who knew? You have to arrive by boat.

Beer And Waffles: Arrival!
http://beerandwaffles.blogspot.com/2013/08/arrival.html
Wednesday, August 07, 2013. We’ve arrived in the first of our two exotic locales – Cape Town. It is, in a word, AMAZING. By the time we'd left the luggage retrieval area, I'd resigned myself to never seeing the suitcase again, but at least wasn't choking with inarticulate rage, the way I usually am after dealing with Air Canada employees. My mood improved when we realised that there was a full scale grocery store in the airport. How brilliant is that? Why doesn't every airport do this? When we finally, f...

Beer And Waffles: April 2009
http://beerandwaffles.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 27, 2009. Marrakesh was a ton of fun and we spent four days wandering around enjoying all of the exotic sights. Such as these stops signs (which we had also noticed in Dubai) that I think look just like three people in a canoe, but I don't think the Arabic world is actually trying to evoke pine forests, portages and black flies. There were also road signs to exotic locales:. Gigantic storks roost in the walls of the old buildings:. And oranges grow from the trees JUST LIKE THAT:. I was righ...

Beer And Waffles: July 2013
http://beerandwaffles.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Tuesday, July 30, 2013. Woman In White - Book Review. This time I tried to be strategic. I used little IKEA Travel bag thingees, and yet I still have somehow not brought enough t-shirts, packed too many shoes and not enough bras. I dunno. First book to tackle was a 600 pager: Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White. I'd ordered it because The New Yorker. Had an interesting review. Of Wilkie Collins recently, I'd read and loved The Moonstone,. I don't think so. In my version, she ditches Laura in the mad house...

Beer And Waffles: February 2009
http://beerandwaffles.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Wednesday, February 25, 2009. Done Diddy Done Done. So my precious dudes, I'm done. I'm moving to Done-caster, I'm riding on a done-key, my favourite character on old school 90210 was Done-a, I'm a blood done-or. I'm finished my effing thesis! 470 pages, 140,000 words, 11,000 lines and 1,380 paragraphs, the thickness of a McDonald's quarter pounder). Hurray! Andrew took photographic proof as I was reviewing the thing for the last time :. Done-y Brasco, Done Corleone, Done-y Osmond, Done-attella Versace.

Beer And Waffles: November 2008
http://beerandwaffles.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 25, 2008. The unavoidable Obama post. I think it's safe to say that most Western democracies are more left-leaning than the United States, and so the election of Barack Obama as a Democrat president seems to have basically pleased Europe. I'm no pundit and I don't know much about politics but it does seem like Obama has reinvigorated people here. Andrew reports overhearing excited and friendly (! Thirdly, no matter how great he is, I don't think he can fix everything. Amy, Vi and Andy.

Beer And Waffles: Cape Town and Kalk Bay
http://beerandwaffles.blogspot.com/2013/08/cape-town-and-kalk-bay.html
Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Cape Town and Kalk Bay. Our glorious run of Cape Tonian weather couldn't hold and after our first Monday we were faced with rain, wind and more rain. We dealt with this setback by heading indoors. First to the acquarium, which apart from a terrifying puppet show featuring animatronic frogs learning about the environment, was wonderful:. Violet has found Nemo:. As close as we came to a shark, thank God:. Was the bed where breathed his last. Not the most compelling museum, w...

Beer And Waffles: Going into Battle
http://beerandwaffles.blogspot.com/2013/08/going-into-battle.html
Sunday, August 04, 2013. After a very satisfying amount of picnicking, fair-visiting, shopping (did I mention Sue introduced me to Joules. And The White Company. The Hortecs left Wales and drove across England to the south east - destination: the lovely rolling countryside of East Sussex. En route to those rolling hills we stopped by one of the Duke of Wellington's homes, Stratfield Saye Hous. Strafield Saye it ain't so! Backyard at Stratfield Saye. The highlight of Andy's trip to Stratfield Saye? I digr...

Beer And Waffles: Whine Region
http://beerandwaffles.blogspot.com/2013/08/whine-region.html
Friday, August 23, 2013. And secondly, you're moments away from going to Malawi (yes, Malawi! Where it's the dry season and you won't need warm clothes and rain coats anyway. Wah wah wah. I know, world's smallest violin, or whatever. In point of fact, we had quite a good time in Franschoek and Stellenbosch, which are towns about 45 minutes east of Cape Town, and are surrounded everywhere you turn by vineyards, beautiful mountains and sad giraffes (more on that later). We rented a cottage in a vineyard:.
