St Mary's Island , Whitley Bay. St Mary's Island and Lighthouse. St Mary's Island is situated on the North East Coast of England at Whitley Bay. The Island was originally part of Northumberland but when Tyne and Wear was formed the county boundary included the Island in Tyne and Wear. The lighthouse has been a landmark on the coast for many years, guiding seafarers until it was made redundant and is now a museum. Whitley Bay used to be a thriving and very busy holiday resort but times have changed and many of the past attractions are gone. The beach is still superb though and is used regularly in the summer by families and by dog walkers all year round. Dogs are restricted to the northern end of the beach. Cullercoats Seafront and Beach. Cullercoats Seafront and Beach. Cullercoats bay has a small sheltered beach that is situated between the long sweeping beaches at Whitley Bay and Tynemouth. The beach is very popular with families in summer and a boat launching ramp is still used by a few fishing cobles. The lifeboat station is still active with an inshore lifeboat based there. Whitley Bay Seafront and Beach. These photos were taken along the beach at Whitley Bay. It's map name is Whitley Sands and is a large beach that stretches from the main promenade almost as far as St. Mary's Island. In years gone by this beach would have been jam packed with holiday makers in summer. These days it is still a fine beach used by families in summer and is very popular with dog walkers who use the north end of the beach where dogs are allowed. Demarcation line for dogs!
