Juliette Gordon Low: September 2011
http://juliettegordonlow.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts. Friday, September 30, 2011. It has always been interesting to me to know that Daisy Low founded the most important organization for girls in the United States, yet she herself was childless.* While most people may go off on all the psychological speculations they like, historians are happiest when we have evidence of emotional or psychological states in writing. Alas, Daisy left no such diaries or letters. So, when I was in England poking around Daisy's corner o...

Juliette Gordon Low: The Kinzie Church
http://juliettegordonlow.blogspot.com/2011/10/kinzie-church.html
The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts. Friday, October 7, 2011. When we- appropriately- think of Juliette ("Daisy") Gordon Low as a Southerner, we often forget that her mother's family were founders of Chicago, Illinois. Last week's blog about the church Daisy attended while she lived in England made me recall the extraordinary beauty of the church begun by her grandparents: St. James Cathedral. Today St. James. The Kinzie house, across the river from Ft. Dearborn, in 1832. Daisy Gordon Low was stron...

Juliette Gordon Low: August 2011
http://juliettegordonlow.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts. Thursday, August 25, 2011. Tableaux vivants combined the theater Daisy loved with the art she adored. A tableau vivant brought a famous painting to life- literally, as people dressed up in costumes exactly like those worn in the painting, assumed the precise pose of the figures on the canvas, and then held the pose while others gazed at them with wonder and appreciation. Once when Daisy was staying at a spa in Virginia she learned of the distress of local farmer...

Juliette Gordon Low: October 2010
http://juliettegordonlow.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts. Sunday, October 31, 2010. A brief addition to Friday's 150th birthday blog, on the actual date of Juliette Gordon's Low's birth. In 1892, Daisy's younger sister Mabel was visiting the Lows at their home in the English Midlands. A Warwickshire neighbor held a birthday dance for both women at the magnificent estate he was renting, called Compton Verney. So this. Is where Daisy spent the evening of her 32nd birthday! It must have been another memorable occasion!

Juliette Gordon Low: April 2011
http://juliettegordonlow.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts. Friday, April 29, 2011. Daisy's Way with Words. If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know how much Daisy Low loved Scotland. When she was married, she spent the hunting season in that glorious country, but even after she was widowed she returned regularly. She had a friend who lived in Fife, on Scotland's east coast, overlooking the bay called the Firth of Forth which opens on to the North Sea. Bass rock looking like a giant sea lion. Quote from Juliett...

Juliette Gordon Low: March 2011
http://juliettegordonlow.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts. Friday, March 25, 2011. Editing, editing, editing! That's what I've been doing, and the importance of that task has bumped the blog for this week. However, as I've been promising updates of the book as we move toward publication, perhaps it's time for a recap and a look ahead. But what does this all really mean? It adds up to me doing one rapid read-through to make the easy changes. (That's done! Where Juliette Low used to live, taken by photographer extraordina...

Juliette Gordon Low: July 2011
http://juliettegordonlow.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts. Friday, July 29, 2011. If you have been following my blog, you know that Daisy Gordon Low was superstitious. Modern-day chain letters were born during Juliette Low's lifetime, probably in the last few decades of the nineteenth century. Since she was so superstitious, it is not surprising that Daisy received and then passed along a chain letter popular in 1912. From her home in England in July of that year, Daisy wrote to her mother with this text:. Photo from: h...

Juliette Gordon Low: September 2010
http://juliettegordonlow.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts. Friday, September 24, 2010. Since I received lots of mail about the yellow garter superstation, I thought a brief update was in order this week. Daisy Gordon made the garters herself. Now, a garter, even one made from silk, is no great sewing feat, but as some of you know, especially if you're also watching the marvelous photos on the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Facebook wall. Stacy A. Cordery. Friday, September 17, 2010. The Paris Exposition was the talk of ...

Juliette Gordon Low: Willy Low's Winning Racehorse
http://juliettegordonlow.blogspot.com/2011/10/willy-lows-winning-racehorse.html
The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts. Friday, October 14, 2011. Willy Low's Winning Racehorse. Juliette ("Daisy") Low's husband, William Mackay Low, was, as the Times. Even at the end of his life, as he lay dying, Willy Low summoned enough strength to sell a horse. And not simply any horse. He sold Imari, the thoroughbred who had just won the Chester Cup. Imari, from a cigarette card. After the race, Willy Low sold Imari for £2,000. How do we know this? Photo of the racetrack from artvalue.com.
