St Albans Own East End: Could we start again, please?
http://stalbansowneastend.blogspot.com/2015/06/could-we-start-again-please.html
Saturday, 13 June 2015. Could we start again, please? In 1914, as this photograph demonstrates, Hatfield Road has been much improved! Incidentally, the bushes on the left indicate that the shops east of Royal Road had yet to be built. Bycullah Terrace in 1964. COURTESY ST ALBANS' MUSEUMS. Further along Hatfield Road is a temporary yellow sign announcing Street Lighting Not Working. It must rank among the least helpful notices for road users. During the day no-one cares; after dark no-one can read...St Al...

St Albans Own East End: March 2015
http://stalbansowneastend.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, 22 March 2015. The district of Camp is alleged to have received its name from the succession of eighteenth-century military training camps held on Earl Verulam's land at Cunningham Hill. Probably to service the needs of soldiers present, a part-time supplies shop would have been created, which, inevitably, included the sale of alcohol. The little community which grew up around these military requirements became the early Camp Hill, which defines its geographic location perfectly. As I understand ...

More Memories of Sopwell. Friday, 17 April 2015. Thanks for the memories! These days I am not doing an awful lot of original research but instead relying on kind souls to point me in the right direction or sending me stuff. So I wish to thank everyone (especially on Facebook. For their finds relating to Sopwell. The odd photo turning up here and there gets me all excited again and I start writing more posts on the website. Mayor officially opening first house on the Eywood estate. For you to enjoy! When ...

St Albans Own East End: July 2015
http://stalbansowneastend.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, 19 July 2015. Last week the British Film Institute launched its online Player, having digitised hundreds of community films which are now available for us to see when we want to, rather than being inaccessible in film vaults. The East Anglian Film Archive was probably one of the first to begin collecting amateur footage (although someone may be forced to correct me on that information). Former Sutton Road railway bridge looking towards Hatfield Road. This picture is a historical gem from a notori...

St Albans Own East End: June 2015

Tuesday, 30 June 2015. A Lark on the Rec. The District Council's crazily simple idea of devoting a family fun day of the year at some of the recreation grounds around town certainly has caught on. There was a choice of five locations in Harpenden, Colney Heath, London Colney, Folly Lane (Victoria) and of course Fleetville. And what defines success for this event? Will there be enough for people to do? Saturday, 13 June 2015. Could we start again, please? Bycullah Terrace in 1964. From the sixties onwards...

St Albans Own East End: November 2014
http://stalbansowneastend.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Sunday, 23 November 2014. View points (or viewpoints), almost by definition, are locations which enable us to see our surroundings. Mostly, they are elevated – tops of hills, castle ramparts, church towers, cliff tops. There are, of course, none of those in Fleetville. Here is, or was, the entire history of Fleetville before even that name was applied. Before even that earlier sobriquet for the old turnpike toll house: "the Rats' Castle", now applied to the public house. In the mid 19th century a branch ...
