Starling Notebook: September 2015

http://starlingnotebook.blogspot.com/2015_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, September 27, 2015. Re-wilding is an appealing project: Let's step back from our domination of the world and invite the non-human other, the Wild, to step forward and meet us. It feels like an act of mature self-restraint, humbly acknowledging value beyond current human concerns. Many conservationists work hard to defend, or recreate, wild spaces: checking non-native invaders; reintroducing departed natives from nearby populations; preserving and recreating precious habitats. But unmanaged wildne...

Starling Notebook: Referendumb

http://starlingnotebook.blogspot.com/2016/06/referendumb.html

Monday, June 27, 2016. I'm ashamed: ashamed of our collective decision to leave the EU and even more of the "debate" we had in the run-up, so full of hate and lies. But I'm personally most ashamed that I spent last Friday bitterly bad-mouthing democracy. As if the majority of people doing the voting were somehow unworthy because they didn't see it my way. And it will take a lot of thought. UPDATE: or, possibly, just this: http:/ www.parliament.uk/edm/2016-17/278. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Starling Notebook: April 2016

http://starlingnotebook.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 25, 2016. My body is not my temple. You hear it all the time: my body is my temple. But a temple cannot be home. The point of temples, shrines, churches is that they offer a place away from the ordinary business of life, somewhere to withdraw for reflection. We cannot sweep away the dirty world but we can infect it with our own outlook, if we get off our soapboxes. We need the courage to wade through a somewhat compromised life, putting aside the comforts of purity and blame. Without someon...

Starling Notebook: May 2016

http://starlingnotebook.blogspot.com/2016_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 23, 2016. Mystery, imagination and facts. I do love a fact. I love knowing the names of things: being able to recognise them again and give them meaning. Long contrails in a blue sky tell me the rain is coming; a May sky full of screaming tells me the swifts are back from Africa. It makes the world more familiar, more predictable: my safe little kingdom. Did the bird have it's meal of rose hip in a garden or from a hedgerow? Does it nest in this same verge? Monday, May 9, 2016. Online: we mig...

Starling Notebook: Blather's end?

http://starlingnotebook.blogspot.com/2016/08/blathers-end.html

Sunday, August 21, 2016. Somewhat to my own amazement, I discover I have said everything I currently have to say about humans and nature, identity and interconnectedness. I thought I could blather indefinitely, but apparently not. I am therefore announcing a temporary cease-blather. As with all cease-blathers, it's unclear if it will hold. If you want to be notified should blather break out once more, please register by email on the widget to the right. Thank you for listening thus far.

Walking the Dog: March 2015

http://petraswalks.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Some pictures of the natural world around Sussex as seen on my daily dog walks. Wednesday, 11 March 2015. First butterflies in the garden. Yesterday was sunny and there were several brimstones passing through the garden. Today I went out to see the heather buzzing merrily with bees and found my first comma of the year trying it out too. Walking the Dog: May 2015

http://petraswalks.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Some pictures of the natural world around Sussex as seen on my daily dog walks. Thursday, 14 May 2015. A walk in the woods. Yesterday I went for a walk with Petra in one of our local bluebell woods. It was just a sea of blue. I don't think I have ever seen such a mass of bluebells before. Let's hope these woods are preserved for the future. Posted by Doug Thompson. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Walking the Dog: August 2014

http://petraswalks.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Some pictures of the natural world around Sussex as seen on my daily dog walks. Thursday, 21 August 2014. Today at the pond. Visitors today included a pair of common darter dragonflies, depositing eggs into the water. I was not able to photograph them but I caught their jealous attendant, another darter resting on a nearby perch. The other visitor is becoming very familiar to me now. My resident grass snake. Today I finally caught it in a picture displaying its forked tongue. Posted by Doug Thompson.

Walking the Dog: July 2014

http://petraswalks.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Some pictures of the natural world around Sussex as seen on my daily dog walks. Thursday, 17 July 2014. It looks like a return visit from our local reptile, none the worse fror its earlier mishap. (See May 18th) It was seen leaving the pond after a morning dip in the very hot weather today. Posted by Doug Thompson. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Where do I Walk? Mainly around the National Trust land at Washington Common and Warren Hill in West Sussex. I also spend some time around my old Steyning walks.

Walking the Dog: Today at the pond

http://petraswalks.blogspot.com/2015/07/today-at-pond.html

Some pictures of the natural world around Sussex as seen on my daily dog walks. Sunday, 19 July 2015. Today at the pond. I noticed a blue tailed damselfly, ischnura elegans. At the pond today. That's only the second one I've seen. This one is a female of the violet form. There were also two more exuviae from common darters - but I have not seen any of the darters yet this year! http://petraswalks.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Some pictures of the natural world around Sussex as seen on my daily dog walks. Monday, 29 September 2014. A fly for a sunny day. A pretty sight on a September day! This hoverfly is known as the sun fly ( helophilus pendulus. It spent some time feeding from the Michaelmas daisies. They are at their peak this week so the sun flies are probably happy. Posted by Doug Thompson. Saturday, 27 September 2014. It's another bug but this one is an American! The western conifer seed bug, leptoglossus occidentalis.

Walking the Dog: October 2014

http://petraswalks.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Some pictures of the natural world around Sussex as seen on my daily dog walks. Wednesday, 15 October 2014. Autumn in the birches. There are lots of birch trees in my local patch so my latest finds are not really surprising. The birch polypore is a fairly large fungus that appears in autumn and can last for over a year. This is a fresh one which appeared this month. The tree is dead and a favourite haunt of greater spotted woodpeckers. ( As seen here. 8211; the 5,000 year old mummy found in the Tyrol.

Walking the Dog: Darters have bred!

http://petraswalks.blogspot.com/2015/07/darters-have-bred.html

Some pictures of the natural world around Sussex as seen on my daily dog walks. Saturday, 4 July 2015. Last August I recorded common darters laying eggs in my front pond and posted a picture. The original large picture is here. Today I found three exuviae of common darters on the leaves of my water iris. So the pond has successfully bred common darters along with a host of azure damsels and large red damsels. Posted by Doug Thompson. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Where do I Walk? Walking the Dog: Bug and butterfly

http://petraswalks.blogspot.com/2015/08/bug-and-butterfly.html

Some pictures of the natural world around Sussex as seen on my daily dog walks. Saturday, 8 August 2015. I found this bug yesterday in the garden. It's a red legged shieldbug, pentatoma rufipes. The nymphs live on oak trees so it's not surprising really since there are oak trees overhanging the garden. Today's visitor was a common blue butterfly. Apparently they are becoming scarcer so I'm pleased we still have them here. Posted by Doug Thompson. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Where do I Walk?

Walking the Dog: More darters

http://petraswalks.blogspot.com/2015/08/more-darters.html

Some pictures of the natural world around Sussex as seen on my daily dog walks. Sunday, 9 August 2015. Freshly emerged overnight, two female common darters were still sitting on the bushes near the pond at midday today. From the evidence of their exuviae, left on the water iris stems, there must have been a third somewhere! Posted by Doug Thompson. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Where do I Walk? And other interesting places in West Sussex. The ideal walking companion. Insect and spider list.
