The State Of My Ignorance

Saturday, November 29, 2014. The Problem With Pronouns. One of the struggles with the English language is the lack of a gender-neutral pronoun. Sure, we have they, them. But that doesn’t really do the trick when trying to describe a potential person of unknown gender. In such cases, we usually resort to saying “s/he”, which works in writing, but not when speaking. There is also the trouble of trying to use pronouns to describe people who may not identify as male or female. So what’s the deal? The answer ...

The State Of My Ignorance: April 2013

Monday, April 1, 2013. Honorary Degrees: Neither Honorary, Nor Degrees. Getting a PhD is hard work! So the fact that some schools just hand them out blows my mind. It seems insulting to the people who have actually earned them, and it seems insulting to the people who are receiving them. It also makes the school look bad, I think. Imagine if the Olympics gave out honorary gold medals, or the Nobel Prize committee gave out honorary peace prizes? It would be the most ridiculous thing you could ever imagine.

The editor won’t be prone to those biases. Now, you might be thinking “Sure, Zak. Some people are like that. But I know both sides of political/religious/etc. debates, and my opinions are firmly planted in reality.” Well, maybe. Let’s look at a relevant study:. A study by Geoffrey Cohen. Here is a real life example. Democrats agree...

Tuesday, January 18, 2011. The Truth About Organic Food. Every day, organic food is becoming more and more popular. Most people, understandably, claim that they want to eat healthy food, and that organic is a good way to go about it. People also tend to claim it tastes better than regular food. But is this all true? Is it really healthier? Does it really taste better? Is it worth all that extra money? In this blog post, I am going to present what the scientific evidence says. First, what is organic food?

The State Of My Ignorance: God and Neuroscience (part two)

http://stateofmyignorance.blogspot.com/2014/07/god-and-neuroscience-part-two.html

Thursday, July 24, 2014. God and Neuroscience (part two). I stated that when it comes to arguing against the fact that the mind is a product of the brain, there is basically only one rebuttal that proponents of dualism use. These analogies are very clever, and sound superficially plausible. But what does it imply when you use those analogies to explain the mind/brain relationship? If dualism were true, we would expect any sort of mind altering substance. To create a “ locked in. 8220;That looks like my w...

Rants, Raves and Rambles of a Tiny Cog. March 31, 2014. Living with a Doomie. All of this changed in September, when I started living with Chadwick Van Der Woodsen (name has been changed to protect privacy). I’m here to tell you that living with a platonic dude roomie — henceforth known as the doomie — is pretty much the best living situation EVER. Here are just a few reasons why…. Do you know how many shits a guy gives about decor? No Bruce Lee posters for us! Sure, I might clean more often than my doom...

Rants, Raves and Rambles of a Tiny Cog. Daily Archives: March 28, 2014. March 28, 2014. Ask anyone, and they’ll probably find it’s pretty easy to rhyme off a list of Canadian stereotypes. And AREN’T THEY ALL HILARIOUS. Sure, a lot of us love hockey. And Tim Hortons. And some of us even live in igloos! But the majority of these clichés are total. Bullshit. For example: NOBODY SAYS “ABOOT”! That being said, there are some general observations of Canadians that tend to be true across the board…. Canadian: &...

The average person will work for about forty years before they’re eligible for retirement. Yay! I landed in option three. In high school, I thought I wanted to be a lawyer. A corporate lawyer, to be exact. Doesn’t that sound fancy? I probably should have known that social work wasn’t what I TRULY wanted to do when I got my acceptance letter in the mail and cried. Alas, I moved to ...Just to...

When automatic dispensers were introduced into public arenas, I was just as thankful as anyone else to not have to touch anymore germ-infested faucet handles before getting back to eating my nachos. Rants, Raves and Rambles of a Tiny Cog. March 6, 2014. I recently read a delightful article that reassured Canadians there would be a “slow start to spring”. This is just what I wanted to hear, as the final months of winter are my favourite time of the year! Here are five reasons why this is entirely untrue:. More importantly, WHEN will it melt? I’m almost entirely positive it’s going to take a little help from our friend, GLOBAL WARMING. Is there such a thing called the tree of death? 8221; …asked...
