Bubbly Red Stuff: April 2005

April 23, 2005. My mom wrinkling our noses at our plate, while my dad complained, "Why do I even bother? Can't you show just one bit of appreciation for my effort? The free-standing wood-burning stove that my parents have to heat the house. And no, you don't quite see, he'd cook it. 2-3 eggs (depending on how hungry you are). 2-2 1/2 large matzos. Once the matzos and eggs are done, serve them onto a bowl or plate, then sprinkle with sugar (growing up with all this stuff you just sprinkled sugar on, no wo...

I think we must be in some kind of golden age of television, here in the 00's. Even if you put aside the astounding output of HBO, I've really enjoyed shows like Arrested Development and Heroes and Firefly and How I Met Your Mother and Dexter, and even gotten pulled into girlier stuff like Project Runway and Ugly Betty. I guess I'll have to catch up with that Soprano show too at some point. Good things lie ahead. Posted by contrarybear @ 4:58 PM. Chicago, United States. View my complete profile.

My girlfriend and I had an exchange yesterday that reminded me that my knowledge of Dutch (and all other languages besides English) is Paris-Hilton-shallow:. Me, looking at the baseball results on the computer: "Jesus! My pitcher got murdered today! Her, slightly alarmed: "Really? Me, a bit abashed: "No, not really . I mean, he gave up a lot of runs today.". That's the result of years of convoluted rationalization. Here, for your enjoyment, are a few Dutch idioms that I have. Picked up in my time here:.

January 27, 2005. Look at 'em go! A continuing report of our ants' progress in their strange gel world. They have finally started to tunnel! It's a fairly short tunnel so far, but they are small ants, so it's both a lot of work and a long enough space for them. In my last report. Posted by bubbly @ 1:49 PM. January 23, 2005. Posted by bubbly @ 6:27 PM. My child is monstrously ugly. I came across this photo at work while I was looking up something in the New England Journal of Medicine:. January 21, 2005.

December 28, 2004. What your toilet bowl says about you. A couple of months ago I wrote a post. About the evil shelf toilet that our house happens to have. Apparently, a lot about Dutch society can be deduced from the shelf toilet. In last week's News of the Weird. Which I have delivered weekly to my inbox, there was a story about what a country's toilet design says about them:. I found the full article. Surely we don't have to worry so much about food poisoning these days? Posted by bubbly @ 2:22 PM.

March 29, 2005. Quasi, Melkweg, Amsterdam, 28 Mar 2005. Show two, after seeing Quasi at the Nighttown. In Rotterdam on Saturday. I didn't enjoy it quite as much this time, but I'm not sure how much that might have to do with seeing them already two days before. I'm not used to stalking after bands. But also in Amsterdam they didn't play as many songs and less people seemed to be into them. Before I say more, the setlist:. Our Happiness is Guaranteed. Piece of Love (new). Sword of God, which lead into.

July 29, 2005. Fun with case reports. O always says I'm such a science geek, and part of the evidence of this is my subscription to the Annals of Improbable Research. AIR) magazine, brought to you by the same people who hold the yearly Ig Nobel. In one of the AIR issues I was reading recently, there was a citation for a case report from the journal Burns. The burn only a couple of hours after sitting on the ice. Two days after the injury. Three weeks after injury. Four weeks after injury. Just be happy t...

October 31, 2004. Two weeks to go! And just like that it's only two weeks until O and I head to sunny Jamaica for our holiday. Such good timing, since autumn is raging on hardcore here.
