BARKING GLAD: August 2014

http://rogref.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 28, 2014. August 31                               . Jeremiah 15:15-21; Romans 12:9-21; Matthew 16: 21-28. It's hard to go past the gospel passage for a theme this week.  . Here we are, almost 5 months past Good Friday 2014 and 7 months away from Good Friday 2015, on the verge of spring and all that goes with that, and suddenly before us is The Cross! So perhaps something like "The Cross, Already".  . No, perhaps not.  . The great thirteenth century Sufi mystic known in the West as Hafiz ...

BARKING GLAD: February 2015

http://rogref.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 26, 2015. Second Sunday in Lent. March 1                      . 160;                       . Second Sunday in Lent. Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16; Romans 13-25; Mark 8:31-38*. The Lectionary offers as an alternative gospel passage, Mark 9:2-9, relating to the Transfiguration, without suggesting any alternative Lessons to go with it.  . There may be some advantages in having the Transfiguration a week after the Baptism, but I have never found them particularly convincing.  . So when Paul waxes ...

BARKING GLAD: June 2015

http://rogref.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, June 25, 2015. June 28                       . Lamentations 3:22-33; 2 Corinthians 8:7-15; Mark 5:21-43. The gospel brought to mind an old saying, "Where's there's life, there's hope"; from which we might get a good idea for our theme this week.  . I suggest "Where there's Christ there's Hope".  . Or "Where there's God there's Hope" might be preferred to more easily encompass the first lesson as well.  . St Paul is more difficult this week: it depends how frank we want to be.  . I have commente...

BARKING GLAD: September 2014

http://rogref.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 29, 2014. September 28                                    . Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32; Philippians 2:1-13; Matthew 21:23-32. Not as clear as it might be this week.  . Try as I might, I can't quite see in what way the passage from Ezekiel is "related" to the gospel passage.  . Come to that I struggle a bit with the relationship between the first part and the second part of the passage from Ezekiel.  . From this lesson, I would go for "The Interests of Others".  . If you subscribe to the Dioc...

BARKING GLAD: Notes for Reflection

http://rogref.blogspot.com/2015/08/notes-for-reflection.html

Thursday, August 6, 2015. August 9                                 . 1 Kings 19:4-8*; Ephesians 4:25-5:2; John 6:35, 41-51. I suggest including verse 9a.  . It sharpens up the ending of this passage, and brings to mind the famous encounter between Elijah and God.]. The word that screams out to me this week is "life", so any variation around that word would give a reasonable theme: "The Bread of Life"; "The Gift of Life";  . Life in Christ"; or "Eternal Life", are obvious possibilities.  . In fact, I'm no...

BARKING GLAD: Notes for Reflection

http://rogref.blogspot.com/2015/07/notes-for-reflection_23.html

Thursday, July 23, 2015. July 26                         . 2 Kings 4:42-44; Ephesians 3:14-21; John 6:1-21. I'm tempted to suggest "There is Such a Thing as a Free Lunch" – or perhaps a more adult sounding version would be "The Economy of God".  . Other variants that suggest themselves are "With God there is Always More than Enough", or simply "The Extravagance of God".  . St Paul offers a rich range of possibilities, my choice being "The Power at Work Within Us".   . I'm having issues with "Second Chanc...

BARKING GLAD: July 2015

http://rogref.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 30, 2015. August 2                                 . Exodus 16:2-4, 9-15; Ephesians 4:1-16; John 6:24-35. Clearly something food-centred is called for this week.  . The first possibility that came to me is "Eating to Live", which should trigger in some minds "rather than living to eat".  . For those who prefer something less processed a possibility might be "Our Daily Bread".  . The more liturgically minded among us might go for "The Gifts of God for the People of God". After church (the g...

BARKING GLAD: Notes for Reflection

http://rogref.blogspot.com/2015/07/notes-for-reflection_16.html

Thursday, July 16, 2015. July 19                                     . Jeremiah 23:1-6; Ephesians 2:11-22; Mark 6:30-34, 53-56*. This Sunday is National Bible Sunday.  . If you wish to feature that, the readings given in the Lectionary are Isaiah 55:1-11; 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5; and John 5:36b-47.  . However, virtually any set of readings could be pressed into service when talking about the Bible, and this week's readings are no exception.]. Perhaps less confusing would be "Spreading the Word".  . In our sec...
