Who I am

Turning ideas into reality. The What, The Why and The 4 Hows? When I graduated in 1993 with First Class Honours in Engineering Product Design from Southbank University and said I was a designer, I was asked if I was a flower arranger or a spanner. It is then that I realised I was both; I am a passionate designer who loves engineering. In 1999, I set up Stefan Knox Designs. I had always imagined I would set up my own agency and I felt the time was right. We have invented and licenced several concepts incl...

What I think

Turning ideas into reality. The What, The Why and The 4 Hows? My approach to design involves considering every aspect of a products creation and its life beyond the design studio. Classically, design is the process of bringing form to function, but from the outset my designs also incorporate a consideration of how the consumer will interact with the product. It has to fit with the end customer and all those involved in the process, so that the product becomes more than just a product. Many designers thin...

Turning ideas into reality. The What, The Why and The 4 Hows? Luckily for me, Ken Spencer, the head of Engineering at Hasbro kept my CV for five years. I had applied for a placement as a student. Five years later a position for a designer with an engineering background opened up; I got the job and loved it. I worked as senior designer on boys toys for Hasbro Europe and Kenner in Cincinnati, before working on innovative projects across all the teams. Some fond memories of toy designing include, splatterin...

Turning ideas into reality. The What, The Why and The 4 Hows? Already working with us on their pre-existing car safes, Autosafe came to us with their idea for what became the Cube Byte laptop security cable. Major competitors Kensington were already selling the market leading cable lock at 1, 000, 000 units per year, whilst Autosafe only estimated 15,000. We were asked to create a small, portable and secure lock to fit all laptops, without infringing any of the existing 24 patents. The lock fitted all la...

Turning ideas into reality. The What, The Why and The 4 Hows? Internationally acknowledged as the leading provider of car safes, Autosafe have been producing car safes for decades. They asked us to make their. Pre-existing range of laptop car safes more appealing, with new graphics and designs. It was on my drive into work one day that I heard on the radio how there had been a huge rise in car theft, due to the popularity of Satnav’s. I needed to design the product for easy storage, as well as easy access.

The What, The Why & The 4 Hows?
http://www.stefanknox.studiorepublic.com/how-i-work/how-i-work
Turning ideas into reality. The What, The Why and The 4 Hows? In the very first stages of product design, there are six questions I live by. I believe you can make anything, but only marketable products will sell. T. Here must be something new, inventive and/or innovative about an idea. The whole design process needs to be considered from the very beginning. As a designer I not only want my client’s products to sell well, but I want them to. Make the users life better and not end up in the land fill.
