The Journey

I started this website to compile the histories of these churches and also provide directions to anyone interested in visiting these places (so they don't waste tanks of gas looking for places that may or may not exist). I'll try and add more as I travel back up north. It seems to be that free churches (AFLC) and what few WELS/ELS I've found are always locked, Missouri Synod (LCMS) churches are unlocked, and it's hit or miss for those with the ELCA. Not all Catholic churches are unlocked either.

Richland County (ND)

This only includes the churches west of I-29. Surprisingly, of the ten I set out to find, all of them are still standing. Directions: S of ND 46 on ND 18, then E on 58th St. (Cty. 2). This church is in the process of being turned into a house. Organized in 1898. (ELCA). Directions: At intersection of ND 46 and ND 18N, go S on 152nd Ave. Pretty sure this is closed. Sign said member of AFLC. Directions: W of ND 18 on ND 27. Directions: E of ND 18 on Cty 4. Directions: N of Cty 4 (W of Colfax) on 165th Ave.

Steele County (ND)

11 miles west of Portland on ND 200, then 1 mile south. Beaver Creek Lutheran Church. Org in 1886, built in 1898. 10 miles west of ND 18 at Hatton on Cty 23, south 1 mile, then west .5 miles. Goose River Lutheran Church. 5 miles west of ND 18 at Hatton on Cty 23, then north 0.5 miles. South of ND 200 on Cty 25 1 mile, then east. Little Forks Lutheran Church. 2 miles north of ND 200 on Cty 10, then east 0.5 miles. 3 miles north of Finley on ND 32, then 1 mile east. 65 miles south of ND 200 on Cty 10.

Clearwater Cty (MN)

This includes only what I found in the northern half of the county. Org in 1898, built in 1912. Now closed. Directions: South of Clearbrook on MN 92, East on MN 223, then south on 181st Ave. Directions: Go north out of Leonard on Cty 14, east on Cty 4, then north at sign for the church. Church built in 1904. Not sure if it's closed. Directions: Cty 7 to east on Township Road 17 (1 mile north of Cty 18). Still active (ELS). Founded in 1953 by John A. Moldstad Sr.
