Steph in Zambia

Thursday, February 3, 2011. Is it already February? Am I just getting older, or is time really going faster? My time at St. Francis is drawing to a close and, after a year of living in Zambia, it is hard to “wrap things up” without a huge nshima pot of emotions sticking to everything. Now that people know I’m leaving, I get the ‘sorry-to-see-you-go’ and all that, but I also get the “what are you leaving me in remembrance of you? Here’s a list of “Things I’ve Realized”. Steph in Zambia: Gender Violence

http://stephanieinzambia.blogspot.com/2011/01/gender-violence.html

Monday, January 31, 2011. Tuesdays are clinical meeting days at the hospital, and various departments present a topic to the rest of the staff. Isn’t it common sense and only human to think of all people equally, be they women, children, black, white, rich, poor? The thing about common sense is that it’s not so common. Here’s the thing about gender violence. It’s everywhere, it affects everyone, and it is going to take huge shifts in all aspects of society to change it. There was a situation in which a 1...

Steph in Zambia: September 2010

http://stephanieinzambia.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, September 19, 2010. Do we all live two lives? This false front idea has been around for ages. Religious people prayed grandiosely in front of crowds, flailing about, some even strapping Bible verses to their foreheads. People must surely be thinking, “Wow, these guys are committed. They are really in touch with God, they are full of the Spirit.” Full of something, I agree. What would happen if we lived in a world free from these pretenses? Zambia has some good trees. Steph in Zambia: May 2010

http://stephanieinzambia.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, May 22, 2010. Another day goes by. Since it’s hard to really capture the essence of Africa without experiencing it yourself, I’ve decided to give you a few snippets of my experiences here, in the hopes that you can get a feel of what it’s like! I am interrupted between seeing patients in the HIV clinic by a fellow nurse, stationed in a nearby room. He approaches respectfully, and somewhat timidly. 8220;Can I ask you a personal question? I sit down, and he comes right out with it. The national b...

Stephanie in the Kitchen | exploring healthy eating

Stephanie in the Kitchen. January 3, 2014. I went to a vegetable gardening class last Spring at a local farm. The farmer took a survey and asked what people thought was the easiest things to grow. My experience from trying to garden at the condo made me think basil and my experience at the house made me think garlic. So making pesto is a natural result! But since I’m trying to not eat gluten, or even grains, I’m trying to figure out what to do with it besides put on pasta! Add EVOO until right consistency.

A Little Bit About Me. May 9, 2014 in Uncategorized. I have learned to value not how much I have, but how little I need. So I head home, after just a week in Zambia, jealous for that simplicity. Itching for the clarity that comes in stillness when the power is out and the internet is down and star-gazing is entertainment enough. Be Still and Know. May 6, 2014 in Uncategorized.
