I believe Koh Tao is one of the best and cheapest places to get your open water certificate, so when I was on Koh Tao last summer, I decided to do a open water course. I had no thought about the fact that we needed to know all these technical and biological things too: diving is not only watching fish, you have to know your gear (how to set it up and check it) etc.
