Ruminations, fulminations, and cogitations on the spiritual life. September 3, 2016. You are here: Home. Show Them, Teach Them, Walk with Them. July 27, 2016. Occupied with other matters, I have not posted on this blog in a long time. The following is a sermon I preached recently in the chapel at Perkins School of Theology for the Course of Study School. I occasionally say that we preachers are all “Johnny One Note.” We typically have a dominant theme in […]. Filed Under: Christian Life. May 16, 2016.

May 26, 2015. I wish more 19 year olds had the opportunity. Let’s find them and give it to them. By age 21, I already had a fair amount of experience in ministry. Others do, too, of course. But pastors feel that burden in a certain way. Sometimes we forget who the Messiah truly is. This is the danger of...May 29, 2...

Ruminations, fulminations, and cogitations on the spiritual life. September 3, 2016. You are here: Home. That Pesky Method Problem. That Pesky Method Problem. May 22, 2015. In my most recent post, I tried to show why I and some other United Methodists don’t find the so-called local option on same sex marriage helpful. I said I would try a “method” question in a subsequent post, and this is it. In short, Tweedy believes that, at least from the standpoint of the law, polyamory. A sexual orientation. In...

Growing In Grace: General Conference 2012- Final Thoughts- Disheartened, but Hopeful

Wednesday, May 9, 2012. General Conference 2012- Final Thoughts- Disheartened, but Hopeful. It came. It went. Little changed. With 8 million dollars spent on a global gathering of United Methodists, some interesting stuff happened. The worship services and preaching were excellent. The United Methodist Church is a global church. We are growing in Africa, so much that resources are scarce. It might be the best investment the UMC can make, and yet, I feel we did not do enough. Set Aside Bishop- did not pass.
Growing In Grace: General Conference 2012: Wesley Covenant and Guaranteed Appointments
http://pastorjvickers.blogspot.com/2012/05/general-conference-2012-wesley-covenant.html
Tuesday, May 1, 2012. General Conference 2012: Wesley Covenant and Guaranteed Appointments. With the many changes, discussions and legislation passed this General Conference 2012, I am reminded of the relevance of Wesley's prayer. I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed for thee or laid aside for thee,. Exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Emphasis above is mine.

Words I need to say. Words I think others need to hear. Wednesday, April 17, 2013. Reflections on Red Shoes. Recently a friend and colleague, Christy Thomas, wrote a very thoughtful post entitled “Red High Heels and Annual Conference.”. She offered both practical and theological reasons why she would not. Be joining other clergywomen in wearing red shoes on the first Monday of Annual Conference. While I have great respect for Christy and her reasons, I would like to offer the reasons I will. I don’...

Words I need to say. Words I think others need to hear. Monday, June 6, 2011. Didn't Get the Memo. Evidently it is not possible to bring a resolution to the conference from the floor. So it is up to the trusty blog to have a forum to make this suggestion. I recently read Dr. Beth Cooper's new book, Under the Stained Glass Ceiling: Sexual Harassment of United Methodist Clergywomen by Laity. This book tells it like it is. While my current congregation has not been a place of harassment,. In para. 605&#...

The Future of American Methodism: 5 Predictions. Posted by Kevin Watson. Asymp; 15 Comments. Methodism in America is in the midst of change. It is not yet clear how exactly American Methodism is changing or whether change will lead to a bright future for my own denomination in particular (The United Methodist Church). But it does seem clear that it is changing. And so I’ve found my mind wandering again and again to this question: What is the future of Methodism in America? 4 As American Methodism passion...

Stephen Oberauer's Random Ramblings
Stephen Oberauer's Random Ramblings. Saturday, 16 July 2016. 6 Ideas to Reduce Extremism. It seems like all of these senseless, extremist murders are carrying on without much being done about them. I find it very frustrating. The following is a list of things I think should happen to reduce extremism:. 1 Every child should learn critical thinking. 3 We need to invent better technology to overcome language barriers, e.g. gadgets like Pilot. Where they disabled extremist websites. 6 We need a democratic wa...

Stephen Rants About Things
Stephen Rants About Things. Wednesday, February 17, 2010. Script Review: The Hangover. As funny as The Hangover. Is, I've never been entirely sure how much credit to give to the script and how much to give to the actors. Still, I've heard over and over that if you want to improve your craft in terms of comedy screenwriting, you read that script. So I took my chance when I saw a 2007 draft posted over at Scriptshadow. If Stu mentions the fact that he's a goddamn dad one more goddamn time, I swear to godda...
