The low temperatures on these flights caused unusual problems for the crew. On one occasion Dad’s oxygen mask iced over, and he had to break the ice by pounding it on the floor while holding his breath. From then on he took an extra one, which came in handy during a later mission when he couldn’t unclog the mask he was using. 55 degrees below zero.
