Friday, 6 February 2009. The Lock-Keeper's Cottage, 1980's, 18cm X 18cm, etching. From the same period as Winter Trees. This etching, titled The Lock-Keeper's Cottage was done after drawing inspiration from the fields of Cotswolds, England. It was this series of etchings which placed Stephen in the pastoral English tradition represented by the great Samuel Palmer, and later Robin Tanner, whom Stephen knew well and who gave him great encouragement. And in some parts of the world we’re even worse. But the progress we’ve made since the Enlightenment is remarkable. In my effort to broaden myself beyond just science and Shakespeare, I read Thomas Hardy’s. Tess of the d’Urbervilles. The rest of the story doesn’t bear repeating, though I have to say the final chapters s...
