The HI is a wide-angle visible-light imaging system for the detection of coronal mass ejection (CME) events in interplanetary space and, in particular, of events directed towards the Earth. Since then, in addition to observing and cataloging many more CME, the HI instruments have made a number of spectacular observations and discoveries, including:. Despite the importance of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), scientists don't fully understand the origin and evolution of CMEs, nor their structure or extent in interplanetary space. STEREO's unique 3-D images of the structure of CMEs will enable scientists to determine their fundamental nature and origin. Depth perception, this placement allows the STEREO observatories to obtain 3-D images of the Sun.

Was mich an Stereo so begeistert. Schon als Kind war ich fasziniert von Comics mit 3D-Bildern. Die waren meist ziemlich grob gezeichnet und erforderten eine Rot-Grün-Brille, aber das Erlebnis, wie aus einem flachen Blatt Papier muskelbepackte Männer und hornbewehrte Saurier hervorsprangen, hat mich nicht mehr losgelassen. 3-D im Comic: Thor gegen Ursaurier (c) Eclipse Comics.
