Steve Blain presents "Bird Porn": Whitethroat (with bits of a Lesser)

http://steveblain.blogspot.com/2015/06/whitethroat-with-bits-of-lesser.html

Tuesday, 30 June 2015. Whitethroat (with bits of a Lesser). Is giving a passable impression of a Lesser Whitethroat amongst its usual song. This bird was found originally in 2014 by Roger Hicks in a similar area but wasn't really pinned down until last week when he relocated it. It joins a select group of species I've heard give copies of similar species songs - Firecrests that sounds like Goldecrests, and Willow Warblers that sound like Chiffchaffs - both of which I have now come across several times.

A Little Natural History. Adventures of a naturalist. More photos on my flickr site at www.flickr.com/photos/84259756@N05/. Thursday, 4 September 2014. Our first stop at Arne was a yard where timber and other materials had been dumped. Vehicles have disturbed the ground here, leaving seasonally wet bare ground: just the place to look for rare plants. Mossy Stonecrop. Was here, growing next to the shocking purple and yellow flowers of Sharp-leaved Fluellen. Or between Creeping Cinquefoil and Tormentil.

Which is host to a couple of uncommon weevils. The bigger one is Ceutorhynchus rapae. Similar to the common obstrictus. Black and slender and untoothed in obstrictus. The small one is Ceutorhynchus pulvinatus. More densely covered in white scales but otherwise like the very common typhae. Corn Chamomile Anthemis arvensis. How long will th...

A Little Natural History. Adventures of a naturalist. More photos on my flickr site at www.flickr.com/photos/84259756@N05/. Monday, 24 March 2014. I had only a couple of hours this morning before I had to leave for the airport. I spent the first of them among the orchids on the slope below the cabin. Ophrys. Orchids are one of the best things in the world. Among David Attenborough’s prolific outputs is a series called Attenborough’s Ark. The Mediterranean is the centre of diversity of Ophrys. Back at the lodge, the field guide allowed us to identify our mammal as an Olingo Bassaricyon gabii. Soon after I returned to Britain, Roland Kays contacted me. He said that he had seen my Olingo photos and that they were of an undescribed species that he and his colleagues were working on! Wednesday, 14 August 2013. Is often feature...

A Little Natural History. Adventures of a naturalist. More photos on my flickr site at www.flickr.com/photos/84259756@N05/. Friday, 20 March 2015. I have been doing lots of little bits on the weevil guide, but nothing yet amounts to a sizeable chunk that deals with a single group of species. It feels like I have little to show for my efforts, but it is useful to know how I am doing. So I have put two accounts, one to Polydrusus. And one to the wetland Gymnetron. And a guide to Sitona here:.

Dan's Wildlife Blog: July 2012

http://dansbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, 26 July 2012. I've been to the Farnes twice this year now and what a great place it is! I first went in June when breeding was well underway and there was loads of activity on Inner Farne! The second time was mid July and the island had changed a lot by then, juv arctic terns on the wing and with the puffins mainly on the sea around the island. Here is a selection of photos from both trips, don't forget to click on them for a bigger view! Seak to use this photo. Some more wide stuff. Saturday w...

Dan's Wildlife Blog: Harvey!

http://dansbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2012/08/harvey.html

Sunday, 12 August 2012. Over the last few nights myself and Ben have been filling the August photography lull with a harvest mouse named Harvey! I should point out that it's captive bread so nothing was taken from the wild! Apart from the corn.). First night was overcast so we got some standard shots of him;. The second night we arrived rather late at the field so played around with underexposing some sunset stuff;. And on the thrid night we went for an autumn berry theme. After my trip to Cuba though.

Dan's Wildlife Blog: April 2012

http://dansbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 25 April 2012. This weekend just passed I spent in County Durham. The main target really was to watch a black grouse lek which was simply amazing. Alarms set for 3:45 and arriving, windows down, before first light we were welcomed with noises not dissimilar to an alien attack! Snipe, curlew and lapwing all calling right near the car. Here are some dodgy black grouse records when we bumped into them during the day;. OK, that's enough snipe! I leave you with the supporting cast. After a long day...

Dan's Wildlife Blog: Tody-Tastic!

http://dansbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2012/09/tody-tastic.html

Sunday, 23 September 2012. In August I spent 15 days on the wonderful island of Cuba! This wasn't a wildlife trip but I made the most of things by getting up early most mornings whilst in Varadero and wandering around the mangroves near out hotel. I also spent two days in Zapata. In total I saw around 100 species of bird with 90 of them being new. Most of the new birds were exciting but one bird in particular stole the show, the Cuban Tody! Well done you, stunning bird, fantastic captures. Subscribe to: Po...

Man manifests his own destiny". It would be easy to give up in many situations or buckle when the obstacles become higher and the challenges more demanding. Whilst those around you struggle and give up if you just hang in a little longer, make the sacrifices and take your chances the end rewards can be so amazing.
