Buck Fever 16, 2010. This 16-foot canoe is the fourth in the series of four built for the client's grandchildren. The deer antler motif ranges from the simplest form on the deck flaps, to the most complex on the center side panels, in which a deer track appears between the bases of the crossed antlers. Spiral Fire 16, 2007. The spiral figures seen in variations of fiddlehead designs and double-curves carry deeper meanings in Wabanaki culture; according to Adney they were said to have protective properties. This 16-foot canoe is the first of a series of four built for a client who commissioned one for each of his four grandchildren, with the name of each recipient inscribed on the side. Named after a water-serpent from Passamaqoddy legends, and seen on local petroglyphs, the serpent figure on this 16-foot canoe was etched in winter bark on the suggestion of Alice Claire Tomah, great-granddaughter of Tomah Joseph, late 19th century Passamaquoddy birchbark canoe builder.
