Platform as a Service. August 7, 2015. It was not long ago that MacOS and iOS were far and away the best platforms to both develop on and use. Pleasurable might be the word. How Alex Mahrou from CH2M got MapClub shut down. July 27, 2016. MapClub’s funding curve. Kickstarter notified us yesterday that they were shutting MapClub. Down, and of course wouldn’t share why. This is despite the funding being successful and 15 people signing up. Fair enough, it’s their baby and their rules. Well now we know why – Alex Mahrou’s long, angry and sarcastic investigative piece. On why people shouldn’t do things that he disagrees with. Anyhow, problem number two was missing the dry humor i...

Why I like what3words. March 25, 2016. When I first came across w3w. I had the same reaction many people do – I just didn’t get it. The idea is pretty simple. Give every 9ft square on the planet three words. So right now I’m at spite.nearly.maps. Which is a hotel next to SFO. Or hills.boost.oldest. Is somewhere in England. But here’s the thing. First – where humans are involved you want something simpler. And second geohashes are terrible for actual location when a human needs it. Geohashes and lat/longs...

Thomas the Dank Engine. February 19, 2015. There’s a whole subculture on Reddit. Mixing the Thomas the Tank Engine theme music with rap. Words fail me, but, this is my favorite so far:. I was on DeCentral TV. I’ll be on Science Friday today. Sign up for Steve Coast's Updates. Steve Coast founded OpenStreetMap. And has also done other things. Check out my book. How Alex Mahrou from CH2M got MapClub shut down. July 27, 2016. OpenGeoCodes – Download address data for the USA! July 7, 2016. July 25, 2016.

The world will only get weirder. March 27, 2015. Another month, another terrible and bizarre aircraft incident. As far as the media are reporting, Andreas Lubitz decided it would be a great idea to fly a fully functional A320 in to the side of a mountain. And kill 150 people a few days ago. Six months ago a fully functioning 777 was flown in to the sea wall. A year ago a fully functioning 777 made some interesting maneuvers and disappeared in the South Indian Ocean. With 239 people on board. We invented ...

Measuring continental drift with your phone! | Steve Coast

http://stevecoast.com/2015/02/24/measuring-continental-drift-with-your-phone

Measuring continental drift with your phone! February 24, 2015. Most of the work mapping people do is concerned with moving GPS units. Walking, driving, biking with a GPS and doing things with that movement data. But, there is a big use case for static GPS units too! Guy planting a GPS in a glacier. So the question to me is, instead of having one GPS collecting for a year, could I have 365 GPS units for a day? Or, 4,380 GPS units for an hour…. And get the same result? In the same place. That would be fun!

Website of a site specific sleeper. A fehér zene háza. Lectures, talks, workshops. Unpublished essay: The Value of In-Betweenness. More than 2 years ago I was asked to write an essay about forms of collaborative knowledge sharing, and especially about the role of a media lab, namely Kitchen Budapest. Media lab is a device to work in the in-between. The essay was meant for a book which, I suspect, will never make it to print. Therefore I uploaded it here. Oppio received first round investment. The Secret Diary of SteveC. Dude, I invented friggin OpenStreetMap. Have you heard of it? Sunday, June 9, 2013. After 5.5 years, time's up for this blog. The world has changed, OpenStreetMap has changed. In 2007 OSM was a tiny project. One figure bestrode this project like a colossus. A Fake blog (there was some other Fake Steve guy back then, you remember) was the right way to poke a little fun and puncture a few egos. Namaste. Have fun. June 10, 2013 at 10:12 AM. Steve Coates -

England, Europe, the Middle East by truck in the 1970s. January 6, 2015. As a child growing up in southern England in the 1970s I knew my dad, Malcolm Coates, wasn’t like other dads. His job was driving trucks (or lorries as we called them back then) and he went. We moved to Australia in 1982 and, despite short stints at ‘normal’ jobs, it was inevitable that dad would end up on the road again. In 1985, en route from Melbourne to Brisbane, he was killed in an accident near Coonabarabran. These are vivid d...

Updated: 13th July 2015. Motor Cars and Safety. 13th July 2015 - SLR/DSLR Focusing Screen Experiments. Many modern low end SLR cameras have terrible focusing screens. If you have seen one of the high quality focusing screens found in manual focus film cameras, you will probably come to hate the focusing screens in modern auto-focus cameras. I attempted to bodge a higher quality focusing screen into my EOS 500D, with varying success. July 2015 - More Road Safety. 6th March 2015 - Car Parking. And a couple...
