Berlin, Germany during the Cold War 1. Between 1978 and 1983 I spent considerable time visiting and living in West Berlin, including a term studying at Goethe Institute in West Berlin. In 1975 the Brandenburg Gate was part of the Berlin Wall system. One of the more amazing aspects of the Wall, in a negative sort of way, is that the entire 96 mile barrier that surrounded West Berlin was sealed in a single night (August 13, 1961)! It seemed like no matter where I went there was somebody coming up from behind a dune on a camel to offer a ride or something to drink. The Sphinx with the pyramid of Pharaoh Khafre directly behind it. For the record, Napoleon's soldiers did not shoot off the nose of the Sphinx. Napoleon was in fact an amateur historian and patron of the arts. He sought to catalog and protect Egyptian structures and artifacts. The loss of the nose was more likely a casualty of time and erosion.

Above: The Pompeiian Forum, looking towards the southwest corner at the entrance to the Basilica. From the Forum looking essentially north towards the Temple of Jupiter and Mt. Vesuvius beyond. The same colonnade as above, but looking in a more southernly direction. The Basilica as viewed from the Forum entrance. This building served as a courthouse as well as a business and financial center. A view looking into the Forum from the southwestern corner of the Forum Baths.

Above: The wall and tower from Troy VI, which many scholars believe to be the Troy of Homer. Way, way back in college I jotted down a list of historical sites I wanted to see in my lifetime. Thanks to some luck and a job at a travel club I managed to conquer that list much more quickly than expected. Troy ended up being the final stop, so as proof I needed a picture. I immediately started a new list. Speaking of surprises. This is where early, modern era archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. We can certainl...

Wednesday, November 9, 2016. Sorry for the long hiaitus. Edit: If you came here from Tim's website looking for my tag/card, scroll to the end! Well, here we are. The day after election day. Now that I've started to get over the initial impact of everything and have had time to focus on work and some productive things, I thought I would take a moment and update my blog because. well. I haven't in a while. A photo posted by Steve Jenks (@centaurofattn). Jul 15, 2016 at 7:55am PDT. Jul 24, 2016 at 9:57am PDT.

Mostly Redheads

The daily observations, triumphs and tribulations of a stay-at-home mommy. Sunday, November 30, 2008. Funny kids, sweet husband. Jackson grabbed Stephen's ice-cream bowl and I had to get a pic. Poor kid was zonked- She rarely falls asleep around noise and in the living room. Madeline loves to dress in her swim gear and say she is going to the beach with Nana and Grandpa. Madeline, Ella, Jackson, me. I did an icing heart for him to put candy so he would not feel left out. Remember that when you are sixteen.
