Michigan Hummingbird Guy: December 2014
http://mihummingbirdguy.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Friday, December 26, 2014. Off on a wild goose chase. With the 2014 songbird banding season over, and the late fall hummingbird banding season cut short by a lack of birds, we had some spare time on our hands in December. And, with very low gas prices, and a car that gets 50 mpg, we decided to get away for a few days. But where? Near Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. Canada Geese near Hightstown, New Jersey. Thank you John, and our new friend from Toronto, for being the sacrificial birders! At the northern end...

Michigan Hummingbird Guy: Summer Hummingbirds and other things
http://mihummingbirdguy.blogspot.com/2015/07/summer-hummingbirds-and-other-things.html
Friday, July 17, 2015. Summer Hummingbirds and other things. Hatch-year female Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Summer is also the season of bugs (insects), but it has been surprising so far how few mosquitos and deer flies there have been, considering how wet and rainy it has been. Perhaps the cool conditions (we have not had a 90 degree day yet) have been keeping their numbers down? And finally, an interesting beetle was presented to me at a home where I was banding hummingbirds. It was a species I was n...

Friday, April 17, 2015. March Madness - Searching for Spring - Part 4. It was singing some very short phrases, sounding more like a vireo than a warbler. But once found it was fairly cooperative for photos. Painted Redstart. Falfurrias, Texas. Painted Redstart. Falfurrias, Texas. Painted Redstart. Falfurrias, Texas. From there we headed north to Corpus Christi, and saw the first gulls and terns of the trip. Unlike those we saw in Florida in January, they were in nice breeding plumage now. And after more ...

Punk Rock Big Year: Pelee 2011
http://punkrockbigyear.blogspot.com/p/pelee-2011.html
This is a very long post. It represents an week long trip I took to the best birding spot in all of Canada during migration. I thought I'd do it as a specific page that can easily be viewed as there's likely no one that will have the time to read it all at once. This post will be broken into a few days. I hope you enjoy it. Days 1-4 (Pelee Island). Rumble in, rumble out. He's the author of The Bedside Book of Birds. The second reason was that I'd get to visit The Pelee Island Bird Observatory. The next d...

Sunday, March 2, 2014. Winter is for writing reports. The record setting winter in southeastern Michigan has kept me indoors more than normal. The up side is that I've had more time to get reports from last year's activities finished. These include the 2013 Hummingbird Banding Report (download a PDF here. Adult male Rufous Hummingbird, banded in Westerville, OH. Also available is the Fall 2013 Banding Report from Lake St. Clair Metropark, Macomb Co., Michigan ( download a PDF here. I did manage to get ou...
