Axe Birding

A Bird In The Hand. Wednesday, 12 August 2015. Enjoyed a superb ringing session yesterday morning with 43 birds trapped at Lower Bruckland Ponds. I never knew this place was such a fuel station for migrating passerines, but clearly it is. As ever with ringing I wouldn't have had a clue half these birds were there without the nets. The more ringing I do the more I realise field counts are way off the mark, especially when it comes to migration. It was mostly Warblers; 11 Chiffchaff. I really hope someone ...

Axe Birding: June 2015

http://stevesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

A Bird In The Hand. Monday, 22 June 2015. Hare Today Gone Tomorrow. Took the dog for a walk on the eastern edge of our patch this morning, through some lovely farmland. It was wonderful listening to singing Skylarks. Galore. Most of the land was clearly for dairy farming, and I often find these farms still quite good for wildlife with hedges left to flourish, as apposed to the intense arable farming of this day and age. The highlight though was this lovely adult Brown Hare. Friday, 19 June 2015. First up...

Axe Birding: October 2014

http://stevesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

A Bird In The Hand. Monday, 27 October 2014. My only birding over past few days have been whilst walking Honey - and finally I've seen some notable birds whilst doing this. On Saturday, an early afternoon walk around Axmouth with Jess and Honey was just coming to its end when a Yellow-browed Warbler. Started calling from a tree above us. I can't tell you how nice it was to finally hear one on patch this autumn after so much trying and hoping! For the patch, my seventh. Tuesday, 21 October 2014. Yesterday...

Axe Birding: Autumn Passerines

http://stevesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/autumn-passerines.html

A Bird In The Hand. Monday, 10 August 2015. Friday of last week was a lovely day, with plenty of sunshine and not a breath of wind. And it was nice to finally see some autumn passerine migration. Over Lower Bruckland Ponds several large flocks of hirundines. Flew west, along with a few Swifts. And my first Tree Pipit. Of the autumn. In the bushes were several Willow Warblers. And a Marsh Tit. The latter being my first for the Ponds. Rear) and Willow Warbler. Here too, two of them in fact. Bird of the Mon...

Axe Birding: Unseasonal Ducks...

http://stevesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2015/07/unseasonal-ducks.html

A Bird In The Hand. Friday, 31 July 2015. Well I say unseasonal, but in recent years July has proved a good month for wandering wildfowl. I once had a flock of Pochard fly in off the sea during a heavy rain shower in this month - and they are a true patch rarity. Anyway today's oddities were two Gadwall. At Lower Bruckland Ponds, and then these that dropped in out of nowhere. On Black Hole Marsh early yesterday morning, as amazingly it was my first of the autumn! Labels: little ringed plover. Portland Bi...

Teign Birds: East vs West

http://teignbirds.blogspot.com/2015/07/east-vs-west.html

Wednesday, 15 July 2015. A brute of a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull. That was on the Salty yesterday evening and again this morning is the best the east end of the estuary has had to offer of late along with an adult Mediterranean Gull. On Tuesday and up to eight Sandwich Tern. A quick look off Passage House on this evening's high tide drew a blank with regard the Gull-billed Tern (it was still present until 14.30 at least) but a single Black-tailed Godwit. And four Common Sandpiper. The Two Bird Theory.

The Weekend Biologist: Moths

http://theweekendbiologist.blogspot.com/2013/07/moths.html

Friday, 19 July 2013. It has been a while since any moths featured here. Not had time for a huge amount of trapping this year but have done a bit over the last couple of weeks now the weather is better. Having started only last year and with last summer being rubbish, lots of new species have found their way into the trap. I'm also trying to start with micros but am only having limited success! True Lovers Knot - possibly the coolest common name ever! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Stuart's Wildlife Diary: November 2014

http://stuartswildlifediary.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 25 November 2014. Hoopoe at Dawlish Warren, 24th November 2014. On my day tour in Norfolk on the 14th November we chatted about birds and on being asked what bird I would most like to see in the UK, I replied with hoopoe (Carl's was Siberian rubythroat). And in a bizarre twist of fate a hoopoe was found at Dawlish Warren the next day (15th)! Hoopoe in Egypt 2013 - the view I was hoping for at Dawlish Warren in 2014. Hoopoe in Egypt 2012 - not the view I had at Dawlish Warren in 2014. Pink footed...

Stuart's Wildlife Diary: December 2014

http://stuartswildlifediary.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Monday, 22 December 2014. American Wigeon, Newquay, Cornwall. I haven't been out properly birding since my visit to Dawlish Warren on November 24th! And so with finally a free day on December 20th I was very keen to get out and about - but where to go? American Wigeon (upper centre). American Wigeon (upper centre). American Wigeons (upper right and upper left). I headed back to the railway station, watching a little egret catching fish in the boating lake along the way, and while waiting for the train I ...

The Weekend Biologist: March 2013

http://theweekendbiologist.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, 9 March 2013. Got the trap out last night, trying to take advantage of a bit of warmth before the predicted snow! Worthwhile as well with 5 species:. Satellite (new for me). This flightless female Dotted Border appeared on the wall this week as well. Saturday, 2 March 2013. Common Haircap Moss) from Ayelsbeare on Monday when I was visiting a student on placement. 900 isn't much to shout about but they do say that it is not the size that matters but if it gives you pleasure anyway.

All Photos posted on this blog unless otherwise noted were taken by me with my Canon Rebel XTI using a 300 mm zoom lens. Saturday, September 14, 2013. I call it Birding but visiting Antelope Island is so much more than simply birding. It was a wonderful day even though it rained much of the time. The colors this time of year are spectacular, there was plenty of wildlife and the birding wasn't bad. Here are some pictures of our day, and a list of birds and other animals that we saw.
