THIS IS THE ALTAMONT PASS AREA. The dispatcher’s office is below the Altamont area. The shelf above is the Northern California Extension (. To Bieber, California. Renamed the Inside Gateway in 1950. The clock is a fast clock used only for the passenger trains. Altamont has a passing siding; the track plan is actually a figure eight. Notice the signals on each side of the clock. These are the signals that control the turnouts into the siding. The Spreckles Sugar facility is located east of Altamont.

Milepost 0 on the Western Pacific was a small yard in San Francisco. The railroad ran a ferry service from Oakland for many years until reaching an agreement with the Southern Pacific to use the Dumbarton cutoff. The Western Pacific retained turntables into the diesel era as they ran A/B units that were required to be turned. The Shell station and the Mustang Dinner are located at the departure end of the Rio Grande yard. Arnolds’ Drive Inn provides a neat place for the local teenagers to gather on Saturday nights.

THE ELEVATED TRACK IS THE BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT (BART), WHICH IS BUILDING THEIR OVERHEAD, EAST OUT OF OAKLAND. BART IS MODELED AS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. THE OPEN SPACE BEHIND THE BOXCARS IS WHERE THE MONTGOMERY WARD BUILDING IS BEING ERECTED. THE PHOTO ON THE LEFT IS LOOKING EAST. THE BUILDING IN THE FOREGROUND WAS A TEST TO DETERMINE THE SIZE BUILDING THAT WOULD LOOK CORRECT HERE. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT A LARGE BUILDING WOULD REPRESENT THE AREA BEST. THE MONTGOMERY WARD BUILDING FIT THE BILL.

This is the newest area on the railroad. The tank cars are for a unit train called the Chemical Train. This is a non-. Waybilled train that drops off cars at all towns in route to Oakland and returns in the afternoon to Salt Lake yard. The track runs down from Reno Junction to Clifside(WP spelling). There is a siding here and three line side industries. The CZ is eastbound for Salt Lake City.
