Far east of eden. Biblical studies, ministry, and other impossible endeavors. Thoughts on Ferguson (and what it has to do with a Chinese church’s youth group). It was in answer to this question that I shared the following thoughts with my youth group. These are just the general notes. 8211; Ferguson is in the news. There are many opinions, lots of heated debates, and arguments. The circumstances are tragic and they bring the issue of race to the front of our minds. 8211; How many of you have heard? No Bo...

Classic Theology New: Was Jesus Treated as Divine in Early Christianity?
http://classic-theology-new.blogspot.com/2014/01/was-jesus-treated-as-divine-in-early.html
Monday, 6 January 2014. Was Jesus Treated as Divine in Early Christianity? Not utterly convincing at this stage. Sunday, January 12, 2014. It is interesting that the early worship of Jesus is consistent not only with trinitarian, but also with many unitarian theologies. His points seem to undermine this sort of reasoning: Jesus was properly worshiped, therefore, Jesus had the divine nature. Thursday, April 10, 2014. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Thursday, 7 August 2008. Book Review: Rowan Williams, 'Tokens of Trust. An Introduction to Christian Belief'. A guest-post by Joan Durdin. The book’s sub-title is ‘An Introduction to Christian Belief’. It is based on the church’s time honoured statement of belief, the Apostles’ Creed. The writer presents his teaching in six chapters, each exploring the implications of one segment of the Apostles Creed. The first chapter is entitled “Whom can we Trust? The illustrations which appear throughout demand atte...

Classic Theology New: Study Notes For Rowan Williams, 'Tokens of Trust' Chapter 3
http://classic-theology-new.blogspot.com/2008/08/study-notes-for-rowan-williams-tokens_28.html
Thursday, 28 August 2008. Study Notes For Rowan Williams, 'Tokens of Trust' Chapter 3. A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS. R Williams, Tokens of Trust. It is so un-Jewish! This proclamation of the kingdom was, in fact, talking about being part of God’s people, and this was the central point of debate and conflict in the Jewish world of Jesus. The many Jewish sub-groups had their own particular ideas about who was in and who out. Jesus’ claims about himself found no easy home among these groups. There is remarkably li...

Classic Theology New: The Virtue of Patience and the Traditional Church
http://classic-theology-new.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-virtue-of-patience-and-traditional.html
Friday, 8 February 2013. The Virtue of Patience and the Traditional Church. Do we live in a particularly impatient age? Probably not, patience is a virtue that must be learned, meaning that impatience has not suddenly appeared in the last few years. But do we have the opportunity or necessity of learning to be patient as perhaps people did a thousand years ago? Labels: going to church series. I wonder if its true that we are not God? We are after all the Body of Christ. Tuesday, February 12, 2013. And th...

Classic Theology New: Further Thoughts on Transcendence
http://classic-theology-new.blogspot.com/2008/04/further-thoughts-on-transcendence.html
Tuesday, 22 April 2008. Further Thoughts on Transcendence. A guest post from the Revd Dr Phillip Tolliday, lecturer in historical and systematic theology at Flinders University SA and St Barnabas College. I want to explore further the connection. The way of overcoming this alleged divine tyranny is to ensure that divine transcendence is subverted by divine immanence. Commencing with Descartes’ Cogito. The supreme ego, it seems, is no less tyrannical than the supreme being was alleged to be. He notes that...

Classic Theology New: The Ten Commandments (Kids' Talk)
http://classic-theology-new.blogspot.com/2008/10/ten-commandments-kids-talk.html
Friday, 3 October 2008. The Ten Commandments (Kids' Talk). For a good, usable version for kids of the 10 commandments, see here. A simple kid's talk: Who has heard of the 10 commandments? Can you name any of them? Then put them on the screen and go through them.] The point of the commandments is to tell us who we are. No good, because you could never trust anyone. That's not who we are: we tell the truth, and we tell the truth to be trustworthy. Friday, November 14, 2008. Wednesday, March 09, 2011. And t...

Classic Theology New: Bearing Sin to Change the Human Heart (Matt 21:33-46)
http://classic-theology-new.blogspot.com/2014/10/bearing-sin-to-change-human-heart-matt.html
Saturday, 4 October 2014. Bearing Sin to Change the Human Heart (Matt 21:33-46). Destroy them. In Matthew Jesus asks the question, but his opponents answer him. The vengeful god resides in the logic of Jesus' opponents, not in Jesus. 1 In Matt 7:15-20 Jesus seems to suggest that judgment is a little easier than this - after all, fruit is easy to see. But notice that he is speaking of the same issue, wolves in sheep's clothing. Fruit there is, but more subtle than mere observance of law. Some Posts I Like.
