My background is as a computer scientist, but it is my firm belief that anyone with a good understanding of high school level math and the willingness to learn the rest along the way will be able to build an autonomous drone based on the Raspberry Pi or one of the other popular credit-card sized computers. A Raspberry Pi based autonomous aerial drone. This is the bill of materials for the Raspberry Fly:. DJI F450 Flame Wheel ARF kit (including motors and ESCs). Raspberry Pi Model B (with rasbian wheezy). Adafruit 16-channel 12 bit PWM driver. LM2596 step-down switching regulator (might want a higher quality one). Corsair CX750M power supply for testing. When I begin advanced outdoor testing I will of course need a LiPo battery and a charger. The tools I have used are:. Screwdrivers, pliers etc.

A Raspberry Pi based autonomous aerial drone. The Raspberry Fly is equipped with 30 Amp ESCs and motors with a standard current between 15 and 25 Amp and a max of 30 Amp. So what kind of signal do we need to send along to the ESC to get the motors spinning? When powered up without a PWM signal the ESC's will start beeping. When supplied with a PWM signal between 1ms and 2ms the beeping will stop. An oscilloscope is not necessary, but it can come in very handy when debugging your PWM signal.
