Wednesday, October 19, 2011. Crucial Conversations - Changing Behavior. As I was reflecting this week on the case of Ms. Stanley and Ms. Diaz, I had one of my “light bulb” moments. Is not only about changing people’s minds, but more about changing behaviors. I know I read that somewhere in the book, but it didn’t really “click” until I thought about Mrs. Diaz. The goal has been to get these two teachers to effectively co-teach a class together. She interrupts Ms. Stanley. Only she can make that change.

According to Riley, (Karnes and Bean, p. 634), differentiation for all is only a pretense if it doesn’t examine the unique needs of our gifted students and provide interventions. For meeting those needs. Without proper training in the effective use of interventions for gifted students, how can we say our teachers are adequately differentiating for our gifted students? How can we provide qualitative differentiation?

When I first started teaching, collaboration came in the form of grade level meetings. We met once a week to make sure we were all covering the same material at the same pace. There was very little exchange of ideas as we were encouraged to follow the “book”. We talked very little about our students. The purpose of this team was to meet the needs of our clients.
