Sigurd Lewerentz's St. Mark's church in Stockholm is one of the most powerful spaces I have experienced. Our professor, Jouni. Strict control of natural light. Amazing skewed brick vaults. Dream-like use of artificial light. Meaningful asymmetry. The blank, square exterior volume modestly hides the dramatic interior and stands in contrast to the birch forrest. Gunnar Asplund's Stockholm Library. Skogskyrkogården (Woodland Cemetery), designed by Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz. The door to happiness.

Our class took a field trip to Chicago last week. We had to meet on site at 10:15 am, and the drive from STL is 5.5 hours, so do the math and figure out what time we got on the road that morning. A Walter Netsch building at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Bertrand Goldberg's Marina City. The units at Marina City are actually incredibly affordable because they were built for the Janitor's Union. But these are the views. Rooftop of Marina City. A little excitement in what would have otherwise been an uneventful friday. The work is coming along well. everyone is really busy out on the floor and walls and rooms are popping up out of nowhere. I enjoy all the little problems that arise, and inturn the problem solving of our offices. Is this something I could do with my life? This last one is sort of magestic.

Friday, 19 December 2008. Two days in Munich then onward to Mayrhofen. My room is definitely three times the size of my place in London. And it has a sofa (come kip on my couch. it folds out.kindofabigdeal). Jon on his first day as the Bear. Kind of scary. He made a little girl cry. Yesterday was my first day as the Bear:. Two prework beers is a must. I danced with a lot of old men which poses problems in that (a) I'm rusty on my swing dancing and (b) I cant see a darn thing. Ps that bear is HORRIFIC!
