Tap-Tap | Short Term Memory
https://stmemory.wordpress.com/2013/09/30/tap-tap
Tandem in the Foreign Service. By stmemory on September 30, 2013. Our car finally arrived, and we’ve been navigating our way through Port-au-Prince and Petionville (the fancy suburb/neighborhood up the hill from the city center.) It’s great to have wheels to go out, go shopping, and run errands. But traffic is pretty awful. There’s no way around it. The roads are simply not wide enough (or paved enough) for the amount of cars, trucks and tap-taps that use them. What’s a tap-tap, you ask? You are commenti...

You Can Call Me Al: May 2015
http://alcaniglia.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
You Can Call Me Al. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Last Thursday was a random German holiday, so we took a 4 day road trip through the Bavarian Alps. Drove down to Munich on Wednesday night and Sara landed in Munich from the US on Thursday morning. Our first stop was in Dachau - the first German concentration camp in a Munich suburb. The famous "Arbeit Macht Frei" (Work sets you free) sign. A chess set carved by one of the prisoners. The mountains actually make the castle look small. I love this view. In honor o...
You Can Call Me Al: September 2014

You Can Call Me Al. Monday, September 22, 2014. I got to cross an item off my bucket list this weekend when I attended the opening day of Oktoberfest in Munich. After driving down Friday night, we had a hearty German meal, followed by some pretzels and schnapps shots in the hotel room. On Saturday morning, we started off nice and early - leaving the hotel around 815 in the morning. That's 7 full liters of beer! Links to this post. Monday, September 15, 2014. The rental house for the week. Not-en*tire,ly ...
Service Centered: Birthday Backpacking Euro Vacation (Part 1: Belgium)

Service Centered: Thoughts on public service while exploring D.C. and the world. Tuesday, November 4, 2014. Birthday Backpacking Euro Vacation (Part 1: Belgium). A classy bike in Brugges. For my thirty-third (? Birthday, I decided to pretend that I was once again a college-aged vagabond and take a little backpacking voyage through a corner of the continent. With a few minor upgrades of course. Brugges vs. Ghent. When in Brugges, don't think, eat the fries. Noodles in Ghent (plus beer, of course). From Br...

Service Centered: Thoughts on public service while exploring D.C. and the world. Tuesday, May 27, 2014. Old town and Blue Mosque. Inside of the Hagia Sophia. Originally built in 537. More Hagia Sophia - it is truly one of the most stunning buildings I've ever been inside. Storm clouds float in as we enjoyed the views from the Asian side of the Bosphorus. Floating down the Golden Horn with a crescent moon above. Hagia Sophia lit up at night. View of the old town from the hotel roof. I'm Not Giving Up My N...

Service Centered: Thoughts on public service while exploring D.C. and the world. Monday, November 11, 2013. Outside of the office, I've been lucky to score some amazing invites to some great events. First on that list was the Season 2 Premier of the Norwegian/Netflix show Lilyhammer. So wonderful and full. I love that Norwegians fully embrace a low-key evening at home with friends over a simple home-made dinner followed by coffee and a rousing game of Ticket to Ride. I was warned more than once t...Discl...
Service Centered: A Long Ride (or Many)
http://servicecentered.blogspot.com/2014/09/a-long-ride-or-many.html
Service Centered: Thoughts on public service while exploring D.C. and the world. Tuesday, September 2, 2014. A Long Ride (or Many). To getting to the top of Grefsenkollen, one of Oslo's favorite cycling challenges. Since I last wrote about becoming a bike lady. Proof I did it! Me and my trusty bike riding partner/guru (and our bikes) enjoy a post-ride meal - Kebab from Carmel Grill. I am officially obsessed. A group of ladies and their bikes enjoy a mid-ride snack. Service Centered: January 2014
http://servicecentered.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Service Centered: Thoughts on public service while exploring D.C. and the world. Thursday, January 9, 2014. Speaking of skis, I used the day after Christmas to take my 10-year old niece up to the local ski hill and get some skiing in myself. 49 Degrees North hasn't changed one bit since I first learned how to ski there 22 years ago (yikes! As for resolutions, I'm sure I have some. 49 Degrees North, an amazing view, and a few lucky souls. Flying into Seattle at Sunset. Life at the Cabin. Wanderings of a C...
Tabbies In Tow: RAM - the key to speaking a new language
http://tabbiesintow.blogspot.com/2015/06/ram-key-to-speaking-new-language.html
A couple and their tabbies give up the comforts of everyday life to move into the unknown world of life in the Foreign Service. Saturday, June 27, 2015. RAM - the key to speaking a new language. But when I'm not obsessing over how to say something, I'm equally obsessing over why it's so hard to simply swap out one set of words for another to convey a thought. Because really, that's all it is, right? Yesterday, I figured it out and here's why:. First, you have to run the "What Is My Opinion On This Topic?
You Can Call Me Al: February 2014
http://alcaniglia.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
You Can Call Me Al. Saturday, February 22, 2014. I think Thomas Jefferson said it best. 8220;A walk about Paris will provide lessons in history, beauty, and in the point of Life.”. 8213; Thomas Jefferson. Gorgeous sunset behind the Louvre. After a fantastic Valentine's dinner, we walked along the river and stopped for a ride on this carousel. The desserts in Paris are SO good - this macaroon shop had a line out the door. Great flea market under the RER line. The view from Sara's firm. Links to this post.

Tandem in the Foreign Service. Jalousie: City in the Sky. Uphill from Port-au-Prince is the suburb/neighborhood of Petionville. It’s where you’ll find many swanky restaurants, luxury hotels, and beautiful homes with stunning views. But take a different road and you will end up in a totally different neighborhood: Jalousie. Time to explain where the name comes from. We finally checked off another place on our Nicaragua must-see list: Ometepe. A few months ago we ventured far outside Port au Prince –...
