Few activities offer the variety of situations and the opportunity of real team work between handler and dog. Herding dogs must cooperate with the handler, yet use their own initiative and judgment. They must be able to work with gentleness, yet show strength in facing up to a stubborn animal. Competitive herding tests and trials are offered through AKC. American Kennel Club), AHBA. Come along with us as we learn how to start an Australian Shepherd puppy, hopefully all the way through to a Working Trial championship and beyond. Sunday, November 25, 2012. Stockdog Clinic at Trish’s New Digs. Host a stockdog clinic with Kathy before she heads north for the Winter. Some basic thoughts that I had:. I really need to find some sturdy bamboo to make the bottle sticks. Rippa needs them. Oh, and I got to pet a lot of dogs, which is always lovely. When I set up my sheep, don’t be marrie...

Come along with us as we learn how to start an Australian Shepherd puppy, hopefully all the way through to a Working Trial championship and beyond. Monday, September 9, 2013. W Lazy J Cattle Camp: Lectures by Betty Williams. So some highlights from Betty’s talks at camp (I don’t do stenography, so this is paraphrased, I apologize if I get anything wrong):. If cattle are worried about a dog, they’ll turn to look for it. They have really bad depth perception -. The cow the dog is heeling isn’t necess...

C-Myste Sir Hugh Evans, FM, CGC, JHD, HS, CD. April 3, 1996 - May 15, 2010). Ron and Kathleen Stewart's Cardigan Welsh Corgi. These photos were taken on Hughie's last morning. People who have owned more than one dog in a lifetime will often name one who was particularly special. For Ron, that dog was Hughie. When Sparkey died, we got Radar the puppy. We believe that Radar extended Hughie's life by giving him the role of mentor. Then we got Sparkey's great-granddaughter, Dixie. Even though Hug...The new p...

http://bordervalleyrescue.blogspot.com/2010/02/augie-on-vacation-day-2.html
BorderValley Rescue in Oregon. Augie on Vacation day 2. Saturday, February 20, 2010. Hi, this is Miz Augie. I thought I would type a few words and post a few photos while Fynn's mom or Tink-Mom as she said I could all her, is napping. I guess she's exhausted from all that filming and using that camera in front of her face, I think it's kind of heavy because she carries in with a leash and collar thicker that mine around her neck. A stick in your ear to talk to! Amazing what humans can do with their ears!

You can read part 1 here. Dustin Wood uses his horse’s butt as a wing (as mentioned below). Mr Pate’s cattle clinic was one of the best clinics I’ve been to for a number of reasons:. It was ridiculously cheap. Think of this as. 8211; that’s how he thinks of low-stress stockmanship. No hurky jerky&#...When in...

Rippa the Stockdog: A "using dog" or a "using person"?
http://rippaherds.blogspot.com/2015/08/a-using-dog.html
Come along with us as we learn how to start an Australian Shepherd puppy, hopefully all the way through to a Working Trial championship and beyond. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. A "using dog" or a "using person"? I've learned a phrase from Shannon: "using dog." Like a "using horse," a using dog is a dog that gets it done on the ranch but maybe isn't so wonderful for exhibition because of whatever reason. I'm starting to think I've got "using dogs.". 3 Bringing them back out of the yard. Both dogs do this p...

Rippa the Stockdog: June 2015
http://rippaherds.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Come along with us as we learn how to start an Australian Shepherd puppy, hopefully all the way through to a Working Trial championship and beyond. Monday, June 15, 2015. Back to Basics Again. Here's why I'm still a mediocre trainer at best: I entered my dog before she was ready in a trial, put too much pressure on her, and caused her to mostly shut down on me, not because she doesn't want to work, but because she doesn't know what I'm trying to do and I'm telling her too harshly - or so I think. Rippa's...
