Saturday, August 8, 2015. Summersweet, Clethra ainifolia. The natural form of this plant features pure white flowers tipped with golden brown pollen. The brown detracts from the purity of the white. From a distance the flowers appear to be near death. Their scent is the real draw. Drifting on the breeze, the sweet smell of these flowers will pull one near. Ruby Spice summer sweet. Plants and Stones: September 2014

http://stonewallgarden.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, September 30, 2014. Purple stripe is the varietal name assigned to this garlic by its local grower. It has shorter plants than our other types and each bulb contains about eight cloves. The tag tells the story. Fifty cloves were planted but only twenty-five plants were harvested. Daphne's garlic treatment. Friday, September 26, 2014. More Monarchs For Mexico. Plants and Stones: December 2014

http://stonewallgarden.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, December 28, 2014. This piece of woods is downhill from the gravel bank hill. Our property line runs along the center of the old stone wall. The cultivated field was part of the original farm but is now owned by an absentee neighbor. He has granted me stone gathering rights but there is no way to bring either my lawn tractor nor truck to this area. Anything that I remove must be hand carried up the hill. Labels: splitting large stones. Saturday, December 27, 2014. Wednesday, December 24, 2014.

Plants and Stones: November 2014

http://stonewallgarden.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 27, 2014. Plowing where the grass grows does no damage to the unfrozen surface. Snow covered cars are blindly backed from the parking spots to open ground. There the snow is simply brushed to the ground. When the car is cleared of snow, it is returned to its now clear parking space and the snow that was on the car is plowed to the side. In all things we try to work smart. Labels: clearing the snow. Sunday, November 23, 2014. More Winter Ready Than Yesterday. Placing the cut stems over ...

Plants and Stones: Two Stars

http://stonewallgarden.blogspot.com/2015/08/two-stars.html

Wednesday, August 5, 2015. Salmon Star features subtle colored flowers and understated scent. Many lilies are so heavily scented that being near them approaches an overpowering experience. For these, the smell is soft and sweet whether caught on the wind or with a pollen stained nose placed close. This flower could inspire a classy perfume. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Learning how things grow. March 22, 2012 in garlic. She did get over her fear enough to watch some worms, and even spontaneously pick one up to show me. And she did eventually plant some seeds. We got carrots, two kinds of beets (Ruby Queen and Chioggia), and some rutabaga I got in a recent trade into the ground. Flowers and even fruit are only the beginning. Pleasant Hill Ramblings: On Callaway Road

http://pleasanthillramblings.blogspot.com/2013/11/on-callaway-road.html

Callaway Road (about a mile north of Pleasant Hill) is beautiful all year round. It's a dirt road through farm fields bordered by sumac in the foreground with the Adirondacks to the west and the Green Mountains of Vermont to the east. But it's especially lovely once the sumac has fruited and the leaves have turned. The view from Callaway Road, October 2013. You live in a beautiful place! The sumac is brilliant! First daffodils: 22 march 2012. Just for the record. Mentions of first daffodils in recent years:. Snowdrops have been up for at least a few weeks; wish I'd noted when we first noticed them. Also: squill and crocuses blooming now, too. Links to this post. Word(s) on good plants. From "Gardener's Question Time" on the BBC. Pleasant Hill Ramblings: January 2012

http://pleasanthillramblings.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

I love daffodils. I love all their different forms, from the simple early ones that shout Spring! B's mom calls them Easter lilies, which makes a lot sense to me), to the very finely made N. poeticus. To 'Van Sion' that is as persistent as an old peony. They're beautiful in bloom. I did right by those daffodils, eventually. Hope they aren't too put out with me for forgetting them these past months. Hope they are happy to have some room to spread. Links to this post.
