Friday, February 27, 2015. Here Comes da Fudge, and a few other assignments. Playing right now: Vanilla Fudge - Rock and Roll. I bought this Vanilla Fudge album about a month ago, along with their debut album. I wanted to get back to it in part because this Monday, I'm interviewing Fudge organist/vocalist Mark Stein for an article on the band. Yes, they're still together and in fact they have a new album out. Links to this post. Tuesday, February 24, 2015. S&S) www.andrewdrury.com. It helps to know that ...

shanleyonmusic: CD Review: Atomic - Lucidity
http://shanleyonmusic.blogspot.com/2015/07/cd-review-atomic-lucidity.html
Wednesday, July 22, 2015. CD Review: Atomic - Lucidity. Jazzland) www.jazzlandrec.com. The Scandinavian quintet Atomic comes on like a forward-thinking chamber group, all tranquil and calm, only to unleash a torrent of wild blowing on the unsuspecting listener. They're willing to pull back just as quickly and restate the calm as they are to keep it untethered, or, more likely, to journey off to a different place altogether. It's no surprise that a track appears on Lucidity. As detailed as the pieces (wri...

Tuesday, July 28, 2015. I'm torn between trying to write a CD review tonight and trying to finish reading Your Band Sucks. By Jon Fine. I think I'm going to read the book and listen to music. Or else take out the garbage. Banal stuff, but that's where I'm at tonight. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). 4 Pounds of Trouble:Life with Donovan. And Awaaaaay We Go! Easy To Be Hard. Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Matthew Shipp and Michael Bisio Are Coming To Town. Pianist Matthew Shipp (left) and bassist Michael Bisio (right) are coming to Pittsburgh tomorrow night (that's Wednesday, April 1) and performing at the First Unitarian Church at Ellsworth and Morewood Avenues. I talked to Matthew a couple weeks ago, and parts of the conversation are appearing tomorrow in Pittsburgh City Paper. Q: So did I read that you have an album coming out on ESP-Disk? Might be your last album. It’s m...

Thursday, April 30, 2015. CD Review: Chris Potter Underground Orchestra - Imaginary Cities. Chris Potter Underground Orchestra. ECM) www.ecmrecords.com. Chris Potter didn't set out to do a concept album about the state of the urban landscape. But in some ways the music on Imaginary Cities. Where does it go from here? Was it better back then, or is it better to keep move forward? Maybe it's neither of the above, and better to just stare out at the vast sky and soak in the scope of it. These visuals spring...

shanleyonmusic: The In-Between Post
http://shanleyonmusic.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-in-between-post.html
Friday, July 17, 2015. I'm in the midst of writing a feature for JazzTimes. And while I could very possibly come up with a full length post about something else, I don't think I have it in me right now. Today I don't have to be at work until noon, so there should be time for some serious transcribing, possibly followed by a few minutes of getting an outline together. Has a couple new reviews in the can from me. So far this is one that ran most recently. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Easy To Be Hard.

shanleyonmusic: June 2015
http://shanleyonmusic.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, June 16, 2015. Will Ornette Get to Hang with Bird? I should have written about Ornette Coleman's passing, but in the blogosphere, that's probably yesterday's news by now. Besides, what can I possibly say about Ornette that a million people haven't said already? I haven't even read the myriad links to NPR articles on him. I saw one that included a pic of the saxophonist with a mischievous smile on his face, and it kind of broke my heart. Talk about leaving an empty space in this world! The other ...

Sunday, May 31, 2015. How to Interview Ginger Baker and How Not to Interview Wire. It's been a crazy couple of weeks with a lot of activity geared toward writing. First and foremost, I suppose, was that last week I got to interview Ginger Baker by phone. He's coming to town for the Pittsburgh JazzLive Festival in mid-June, so if there was any chance of talking to him, I was going to take it. Last year, when John Lydon was scheduled to come here as part of a production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Had me wo...

shanleyonmusic: November 2014
http://shanleyonmusic.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 24, 2014. In Memory of John P. Shanley, Sr. Last Thursday, my dad, John P. Shanley, passed away at the age of 79. Without going into details, it was an illness that came on fairly quickly. The last couple weeks were really painful for him, which was hard to witness. I'm glad he's at peace, though I wish he was still here. But as the conversation goes on, he gets his son to commit to working in the shop and he’ll give him the money, including “a Christmas bonus,” which i...I told him what...
