Writing In Medias Res: August 2011
http://writinginmediasres.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
A log of musings and lessons learned by an unpublished novel author. Wednesday, August 31, 2011. Why Adverbs are Generally Bad (but Sometimes Good). Adverbs to writers are like salt to cooks. If you put in too little, it will come out bland, but if you put in too much, it will be overbearing. You’ve probably gotten the idea that adverb use is bad, evil or a little like a fungus growing between your toes. This seems to be an often noted lesson for writers. But the fact is, adverbs don’t kill stories.

Writing In Medias Res: May 2011
http://writinginmediasres.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
A log of musings and lessons learned by an unpublished novel author. Tuesday, May 31, 2011. Stories for Sendai is a collection of short stories and poems based loosely on the theme ‘strength of the human spirit’. All proceeds (minus the overhead costs as far as I’m aware) go to GlobalGiving, an organisation that has a part in aiding the victims of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan. Plus, my story was accepted too, so if you ever wanted to read something I wrote, buy a copy of the anthology.

Writing In Medias Res: June 2011
http://writinginmediasres.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
A log of musings and lessons learned by an unpublished novel author. Wednesday, June 29, 2011. A Product of You. At the beginning of the movie. 8220; I don't want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me.”. This is a very interesting statement that got me thinking. As writers, our work will invariably be shaped to some extent by the environment around us, but as writers, we also have the power to change the environment around us. Why? Because words have power. Even i...

Writing In Medias Res: The End
http://writinginmediasres.blogspot.com/2012/05/end.html
A log of musings and lessons learned by an unpublished novel author. Friday, May 11, 2012. I spoke about cutting back on extraneous activities on Wednesday, and today is the day I will cut out blogging. While I have learned much, it simply takes too much time, and it is not something that gives me enough return value. I find myself using my free time to write blog posts, instead of using it to write fiction (which is my actual goal here). Posted by Jake Henegan. May 11, 2012 at 2:48 PM. Do you even want ...

Writing In Medias Res: Pick the Extreme
http://writinginmediasres.blogspot.com/2012/05/pick-extreme.html
A log of musings and lessons learned by an unpublished novel author. Wednesday, May 2, 2012. I read somewhere (I think maybe David Baboulene’s The Story Book. That when you think of an idea, don’t stop, rather think again and try to come up with something more original. I.e. the first thought will probably be a cliché or boring idea, so take it a bit further to get to a better one. If George A. Romero had thought zombies were too weird to put in a film, where would we be? Posted by Jake Henegan. A collec...
