The native Church relied on the prayerfulness and learning of the monastics to lead the Church through most of the first millennium of Christianity. Fr Michael who has been an eremitic monk since 1993, works from this cell in a house on the edge of a woods on the outskirts of Edinburgh. It is intended to move to a larger quieter premises in the Hebrides/west of Scotland in the near future. Saint Petroc's Monastery in Hobart was closed in 2012. For more information see A Short History of Saint Petroc Monastery, Tasmania. Fr Michael is now part of the Saint Bride Hermitage (ROCOR in Scotland). He still maintains the largest and most comprehensive Western Rite site on the internet at Orthodox Western Rite.
