Strawly Not....

Friday, September 14, 2012. All the mod cons! Well this posting's not much about strawbale building; more the leap forward we took from the old fashioned and minimal conditions to our leaps forward into 21Century! First our flush toilet! The copper cistern hides a modern low water use flush which all goes down to our worms so we try not to flood them too often. Demolition World in Invercargill was the source of many of our reclaimed bits. The weekly clean out. Posted by James and Nicky. So thanks again g...

Strawly Not....: October 2010

http://strawhousenz.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 17, 2010. Bedroom areas Oct 2010. The finished clay floor level will be below the top of the footing wall; the sides of which had been insulated with poly and then DPM'ed. So this 400mm wide sloped section (from the floor to the top of the footing wall, if that makes sense! Was chicken wired and then concreted (to seal that area too), as I felt clay would not hold on the slope. Our sleeping area to the left and the children's to the right. The sub floor has no real purpose other than ...

Strawly Not....: May 2011

http://strawhousenz.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 22, 2011. A beautiful picture illustrating all the hard work and love given to our house. Nicky and Robyn have now re-stained all the weatherboards and re-oiled all the window frames. The S wall just wasn't drying; compliments of the very autuminal weather. With hard frosts approaching (and their ability of 'blowing' wet plaster apart) we came up with the idea of using an industrial diseal heater using tarps as a 'tunnel'. The drying has now started but is ongoing as i type! Will probably try...

Strawly Not....: The final Plaster push!

http://strawhousenz.blogspot.com/2011/05/final-plaster-push.html

Tuesday, May 03, 2011. The final Plaster push! After last weekend's amazing effort from everybody with the initial bodycoat application, the walls still required the 'final' bodycoat; to be the last coat until next year when the thinner lime coats will be applied (thus allowing for any movement in the plaster to show up). Intersting the colour change due to drying. Initial colour is a lovely rich colour but dries pale. Will probably try to repliacte the initial colour with the final lime wash next year.

Strawly Not....: November 2010

http://strawhousenz.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Friday, November 26, 2010. Bucks and box beam in place ready for the bales. Basically the bucks provide a space for the window jams and the beam is cranked down on top of the bale wall to provide structural integrity. Our technique of having the beam in situ first is a little unusual (the Australian method as opposed to the Amercian apparently; Craig and i just figured it out ourselves! Thus here's ends my involvement presently and Nicky has leapt into my shoes very enthusiastically along with. Re-enter ...

A step towards more ecological home design and construction. With film showings of the classic "Fern Gully" and a recent deforestation documentary entitled "The Burning Season", many people from the local community participated in the festivities. Here the beautiful and talented AltShiftNZ (Tom, Diana, Trent, Diane, and Roarke), crew stood on the superadobe/earthbag arch that was created on site with un-stabilized (aka no cement) clay-earth. People were stoked! Great gratitude is owed to Nader Khalili.

A step towards more ecological home design and construction. Continuing with the new tradition of passing along a recipe on Weeeekend Supplements posts, we present you with another relatively simple breakfast beauty: French Toast. Let's roll up the sleeves and get into it shall we? Yield of 4 slices). 1/2 cup milk (add more milk for softer / not as egg-like french toast; or add less milk for firmer, more egg-like toast). A good amount of butter for greasing the pan (or oil). 1 teaspoon of sugar. One of t...

Wednesday, August 15, 2007. Moved in on July 4th! How about a little tour of the finished (it'll never really be finished) product?
