Dirt Bombs: September 2011

A dirt clod once it's been launched. I'm teaching the Medieval Period. One of my favorite days of the year is coming up tomorrow and Friday, when we discuss some medieval alehouse ballads. Here's one of my favorites, "The Three Ravens," performed by Peter, Paul, and Mary:. I'll also be playing and singing "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" by Bob Dylan. It's a version this old alehouse ballad, "Lord Randall":. O where ha you been, Lord Randal, my son! And where ha you been, my handsome young man! O yes, I am p...

A dirt clod once it's been launched. I promised her when I took her in that if her family is up tonight crying and missing her, we're gonna find them and get them back together. But if some sorry joker dumped this sweet, beautiful, smart, pregnant dog at the cemetery, we're gonna take real good care of her. Links to this post. Moderate Gains and Losses. To "keep doing what I do." I have been mulling over some significant lifestyle changes. Inspired largely by my students' class discussions of the novels Things Fall Apart. And The Poisonwood Bible. All the children of the world for that matter- red and yellow, black and white. For fun in 2010, I'm going to brew some ...

Constantly Risking Absurdity: November 2011

Tuesday, November 29, 2011. Your Xrays Reveal There Is Nothing Wrong With You. Xrays, as everyone knows, are radioactive liars. Cold, white morgue tables with no sense of human decency. Their accordion tubes winding every way like a Goldberg Machine. Sprayed grey, as no self-respecting Goldberg Machine would be. What would happen if I were to breathe? Does it blur the image,. Or do particles of radiation get inside me? What if I were to laugh? What if I were to laugh? Precision points, hyperbole.

Constantly Risking Absurdity: April 2010

Thursday, April 15, 2010. Every year, the wisteria grows all around the drive, across the street, over the oak and holly tree, and finally up through the front door where it threads into the small openings at the corners of where the door meets the frame. It perfumes our entire street. Both this year and last year, a northern mid-westerner asked me what all the purple flowers were. Those of you who know, can you tell me: do they have wisteria in places like Minnesota? Saturday, April 10, 2010. I should a...

Constantly Risking Absurdity: December 2009

Wednesday, December 30, 2009. Head of the Flamingo and Gorgonian, c 1725, by Mark Catesby. Over this past summer, I read and was newly fascinated by books on the art of natural history. David Attenborough's Amazing Rare Things. Obviously, there's the massive Empire exploitation going on that fuels the desire for these exotics, and that dark naked underbelly isn't completely divorced from my fascination with these either.
