Student Nurse Alert

Hello. I'm a Student Nurse currently studying in the UK. This blog does not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the NHS, they are my ponderings throughout my journey. I love nursing and the roller coaster ride it provides, so don't take anything I say too seriously. I patch up patients during the day and…

Inspiration | Student Nurse Alert

February 1, 2014. Beside a friends bed is this sign, and you can’t deny it speaks the ultimate truth. Sometimes days are hard, sometimes it is hard to motivate yourself. Sometimes you have a realisation that you need to pick yourself up and get on with. My friend who has this beside her bed is a pretty incredible woman; she’s 23, studying international development at Goldsmiths and along with two other passionate women set up a charity in Haiti called EduHaitian. I am incredibly lucky; I study at a well ...

Real Life | Student Nurse Alert

https://studentnursealert.wordpress.com/2013/10/16/real-life

October 16, 2013. My friend almost died last night. That’s an terrifying phrase for me to put to paper but that is what happened. When you have a uniform on nothing phases you, when I have a a uniform I can cope. It’s a completely different scenario when someone you know is in a dangerous situation. I’d been out, celebrating a sporting win in an extremely drunken fashion. The night had ended, we had piled back to mine and were sitting scoffing pizza in our makeshift den. Then she stopped breathing. The r...

Certain wounds make you shudder | Student Nurse Alert

https://studentnursealert.wordpress.com/2013/10/21/certain-wounds-make-you-shudder

Certain wounds make you shudder. October 21, 2013. A patient was admitted into our ward yesterday. He has grade 4 pressure ulcers on his buttocks. For anyone that hasn’t seen a grade 4 before it is effectively a big hole, filled with sloughly necrotic tissue where his buttocks should be. Despite having numerous lectures on pressure sores, nothing prepares you for the moment you first see one. It truly looks agonizing! He developed these sores at home. He has come into hospital when they are in an app...

Trying to make sense of a lot of stuff, mainly motherhood and nursing. They have no idea. Nursing a nurse. →. September 21, 2013. But I digress – this is a complex issue and falls outside the scope of my post. Of course I understand the importance of evidence based practice, but surely this can be implemented into the training process without the need of the formalities of a degree? Musings of a student nurse from Sydney, Australia. About Student Nurse Lisa. Bridging the gap…. In 1st Year Nursing Studies. Ok, so I am guilty of being a terrible blogger! I had very good intentions to blog at least once a week however this first semester has taken a bit to adapt to. So I’ve had very limited time to do anything much besides what has been necessary. Tuesday, January 11, 2011. I took another orientee in to empty a colostomy bag and she said, "You should have warned me, I would have worn a mask," when we got out of the room. I was surprised she made it through nursing school without having to do that. But you never know what kind of issues patients have. A girl who is also orienting and is 19 told me she was in a "serious relationship." She's been dating a guy since she was 15. Do people really do that? Amy Schofer: The Bottomless Vagina.
