I'm taking notes. In the park, in the after-rain, on the day after the clocks pulled night in for the winter, dark figures flit. A dog, a torch, a jogger. The grass is squeaky. Soft things squish underfoot. Two American women pass, rumbling through the stillness. Their perfume is of incense and tatami, and for a second it transports me far away. Long gone, that smell. I'm taking notes. That you cannot assuage someone’s grief; only try to make it less lonely. That yes, you should go to them. Do not let having no words to say stop you. And yes, you should bring home-cooked food. But no, none of this will make it better. That it feels like the world should stop out of respect, but it doesn’t. Kites still fly and people still dance, as well they should. Those of us who have not had our lives blown apart have a duty to observe. To not look away. This I am learning.
