Suburban Green: About Suburban Green

http://www.suburbangreenblog.com/p/about-me.html

I’m a mom living in the suburbs. In my other life, I was an urban planner specializing in green building, sustainable development and general green living. I have written sustainability plans for municipalities, planted and cultivated organic gardens, helped developers figure out the greenest way to design and build new buildings, helped to retrofit existing buildings to be green and did some traditional land use planning along the way. The first is my family. The second is sustainability.

Suburban Green: How To Plant Tomatoes

http://www.suburbangreenblog.com/2013/05/how-to-plant-tomatoes.html

Wednesday, May 8, 2013. How To Plant Tomatoes. While it is very easy to plant your tomatoes, there are techniques that will help you grow the healthiest and most productive plant. Here is a very quick (mostly pictorial tutorial) of how to plant tomatoes. 1 First things first, dig your hole. Lay you plant down to determine where the leaves will be sticking up. Since I only have a square foot to plant in, I had to be careful to make sure the leaves would come up as close to the center as possible. Lay the ...

Suburban Green: My "All Natural" Fail

http://www.suburbangreenblog.com/2013/08/my-all-natural-fail.html

Wednesday, August 7, 2013. My "All Natural" Fail. So we moved into our new place about a month ago and ever since the day we started moving stuff in I noticed ants. At first it was just a few here and there, nothing really significant. Well it seems that those few ants went back to their home and told all their friends that there is a messy two year old living in my apartment and they all came running. In other news, my wild flower garden and vegetable garden are doing amazingly! Posted by Sasha Freedman.

Suburban Green: First Taste

http://www.suburbangreenblog.com/2013/05/first-taste.html

Tuesday, May 14, 2013. Obviously the best and only reason to grow a vegetable garden is to eat what you grow. Today I got to taste the first radish and man, it was delicious. Perfectly crisp, tart and amazing. The best part is these are radishes that you would never see in a supermarket and wouldn't get to try unless some random farmer was selling it at a farmers market. So exciting! Posted by Sasha Freedman. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Follow Me on Facebook. Promote Your Page Too.

Suburban Green: What We Do When All Else Fails

http://www.suburbangreenblog.com/2013/05/what-we-do-when-all-else-fails.html

Thursday, May 2, 2013. What We Do When All Else Fails. There are days when the boy and I are just sick of each other and everything we normally do. He is fussy at the playground, cries at the library, you get the picture. On these days I like to bring him to the local garden center. We are lucky to have some really beautiful nurseries near us, that are locally owned and have been run by the same families for generations. Posted by Sasha Freedman. Suburban Greenie

I am a 40 something mother of three, living in one of Sydney's North Shore suburbs. On this blog, I record my daily struggles -small and large- to live more sustainably. Tuesday, November 11, 2008. I haven't posted in a while - because nothing much has happened. Or maybe too much has happened. We're still waiting for a big project to get off the ground. And meanwhile we have been busy with many little ones. Here is a glimpse. And I have plenty of ideas for small posts. Better start writing . The Governme...

Suburban Greenie | Cheaper than therapy

October 22, 2014. Learning to love Perth’s lakes and wetlands. If you fly into Perth at sunset (& have a window seat on the left hand side! The beauty of the Swan and Canning Rivers, and the glistening Indian Ocean is absolutely mesmerising. Of course I knew about many of these lakes and wetlands in isolation, and had walked and ridden around a few, but the connection and relationships, their environmental and cultural history and values, were something I wanted to know more about. So, apparently, of the...

The Greenstead’s Garden. Reducing Consumption and Waste. The Mystery Processed Food. The small green homestead. A Tale of Two Labels or How I Found Bouillon Nirvana. July 2, 2014. It always amazes me what I discover when I read food product labels. Like, that “mechanically separated chicken” is a real thing and needs to be disclosed on a label. Or that salt could ever be an acceptable first ingredient in anything other than a box ofwell, salt. You be the judge. 1 SALT. 2. Palm oil. 3. MSG. And no, I don&...
