Her mother-to-be had tuberculosis and the doctor told her and her husband that if they had a baby, the baby might get the disease and take it from the mother. The theory was that the baby would die and the mother would be healthy again. Sometimes Ione sat in store windows for hours and played, enjoying every minute of it.
